In the IPL 2025 season, these five players will be the Purple Cap winners based on their 2024 year performances. 

First, Punjab Kings’s spin wizard and former Purple Cap winner (2022) Yuzvendra Chahal who bagged 18 wickets in 14 matches while playing for Rajasthan Royals in IPL 2024 is another IPL 2025 Purple Cap contender. 

Next, a reliable left-arm pacer with swing and accuracy, Arshdeep Singh from PBKS is a fast bowler who can deliver lethal yorkers with specialization in bowling during powerplay and death overs. From 19 wickets in 14 matches of IPL 2024 to 17 dismissals in 8 matches of ICC T20I World Cup 2024, his four-wicket haul uplifted the team. Arshdeep will be a top contender to win the IPL 2025 Purple Cap.

Third, Sunrisers Hyderabad’s star bowler Mohammad Shami who can in-swing and out-swing the ball is a lethal powerplay bowler with a consistent bowling speed of around 141 km/h and his fastest delivery is registered as 153.3 km/h. He was third among the highest wicket-takers in the ICC Champions Trophy with 9 wickets in five matches and he is returning to IPL from an injury after winning his Purple Cap in 2023 with 28 wickets. 

Fourth, right-arm fast bowler for Gujarat Titans, Kagiso Rabada who is a handy overseas player with the ability to provide crucial breakthroughs, has the potential to be named as an IPL 2025 Purple Cap winner. He showcased his bowling heroics in 2020 winning the purple cap after giving tough competition to other contenders. 

Last but not least, Kolkata Knight Riders’ mystery spinner Varun Chakaravarthy is in the spotlight as a probable winner of the 2025 Purple Cap as he was second from the top among the highest wicket-takers in IPL 2024 and he was a central figure in India’s victory in ICC Champions Trophy 2025.

Similar to the Orange Cap, which rewards batters for their excellent performance in the IPL, the Purple Cap is one of the most prominent awards for the bowler. The Purple Cap is the most prestigious title for the bowler with the most wickets in the season.

The Purple Cap represents the bowler’s excellent performance during the IPL tournament which he shows by wearing a Purple Cap in the ongoing match. 

Some rules of Purple Cap has to be followed to win the title.

Rules for the Purple Cap in 2025

• During the IPL tournament, whoever is the most wicket-taker becomes the Purple Cap holder.
• A leading wicket-taker cricketer can wear the Purple Cap on the field during the match.
• If two bowlers are tied to their score, the bowler with the highest economy rate can have the Purple Cap.
• If a situation occurs in which an opposition bowler took the most wickets during the innings then the previous bowler will allowed to retain the Purple Cap until the match is over and then hand it over to the new most wicket taker. 

How long does it take to announce the Purple Cap Winner?

A bowler can retain the Purple Cap in the IPL tournament until another player smashes his record and becomes the new owner of IPL Purple Cap 2024. 

This will continue until the IPL reaches its last combat and in the end, the season’s most wicket-taker is announced as the final winner of the Purple Cap.

Who is the first Purple Cap Winner in the IPL?

Former Pakistani bowler Sohail Tanvir was the first Purple Cap winner in the Indian Premier League. Sohail Tanvir took 22 wickets in 11 matches for the Rajasthan Royals. Tanvir maintained the 6.46 economy rate with an 11.22 strike rate

2023 IPL Purple Cap Winner – Mohammed Shami (Gujrat Titans)

Mohammed Shami is the 2023 IPL Purple Cap holder. Indian pacer Mohammed Shami took 28 wickets with an economy rate of 8.39 and a strike rate of 14 in 17 IPL matches in 2023. Mohammed Shami won the Purple Cap 2023 for the Gujrat Titans. The second and third positions were also held by the GT bowlers Mohit Sharma (27 wickets) and Rashid Khan (27 wickets). 

2022 IPL Purple Cap Winner – Yuzvendra Chahal (Rajasthan Royals)
