What is a Purple Cap?

Similar to the Orange Cap, which rewards batters for their excellent performance in the IPL, the Purple Cap is one of the most prominent awards for the bowler. The Purple Cap is the most prestigious title for the bowler with the most wickets in the season.

The Purple Cap represents the bowler’s excellent performance during the IPL tournament which he shows by wearing a Purple Cap in the ongoing match. 

Some rules of Purple Cap has to be followed to win the title.

Rules for the Purple Cap in 2025

  • During the IPL tournament, whoever is the most wicket-taker becomes the Purple Cap holder.
  • A leading wicket-taker cricketer can wear the Purple Cap on the field during the match.
  • If two bowlers are tied to their score, the bowler with the highest economy rate can have the Purple Cap.
  • If a situation occurs in which an opposition bowler took the most wickets during the innings then the previous bowler will allowed to retain the Purple Cap until the match is over and then hand it over to the new most wicket taker. 

How long does it take to announce the Purple Cap Winner?

A bowler can retain the Purple Cap in the IPL tournament until another player smashes his record and becomes the new owner of IPL Purple Cap 2024. 

This will continue until the IPL reaches its last combat and in the end, the season’s most wicket-taker is announced as the final winner of the Purple Cap.

Who is the first Purple Cap Winner in the IPL?

Former Pakistani bowler Sohail Tanvir was the first Purple Cap winner in the Indian Premier League. Sohail Tanvir took 22 wickets in 11 matches for the Rajasthan Royals. Tanvir maintained the 6.46 economy rate with an 11.22 strike rate
