The 17th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) is about to get underway on March 22, with the Chennai Super Kings taking on Royal Challengers Bangalore to kick off the proceedings. Over the years, there have been plenty of records in front of billions of crowds, leaving everyone going berserk with individual brilliance, or sometimes even collective excellence, that has taken all the limelight.
Here, in this article, we will highlight the top 10 records that have happened in the cash-rich league throughout the years, which, although they are made to be broken, will be in the history books in the years to come.

19 Catches Across Season | AB de Villiers |
17 Sixes By One Player In A Match | Chris Gayle |
1. Chris Gayle’s Century In 30 Balls
Chris Gayle produced a stellar show in the IPL 2013 while facing the Pune Warriors in Match 31 of the competition at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. The aggressive opener scored 175 off just 66 balls without losing his wicket, of which his first 100 runs came off only 30 deliveries.
No wonder it’s a record that still remains intact, as Gayle’s sheer dominance, particularly what he achieved on that day, is still the talk of the town more often than not.
2. Yashasvi Jaiswal’s 13-Ball Half-Century
The rising sensation of Indian cricket, Yashasvi Jaiswal, made a significant impact in IPL 2023 with a plethora of runs under his belt. Among them, the manner in which he thrashed Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) bowlers in Match 56 of the competition at Eden Gardens remains the best of all.
There, Jaiswal blasted an unbeaten 98 off just 47 balls, and took only 13 deliveries to notch up his half-century. It still remains the quickest half-century in the history of the competition.
3. 229-Run Partnership Between Virat Kohli & AB de Villiers
That was one hell of a game between Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and Brendon McCullum’s Gujarat Lions in IPL 2016 at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. Opting to bat, RCB lost Chris Gayle early, but there was no pressure on two of their most cherished heroes, Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers.
The pair, who have had plenty of noteworthy knocks throughout the campaigns, smashed a record-breaking 229-run partnership for the second wicket, with Kohli scoring a brisk 55-ball 109, whereas de Villiers remained not out on 129 off 52 balls.
4. Chris Gayle, Ravindra Jadeja Scoring 37 Runs In An Over
Chris Gayle blasted as many as 37 runs off Prasanth Parameswaran in the same fixture in IPL 2013, where he hit an unbeaten 66-ball 175 against the Pune Warriors. Of course, there were no-balls to make that happen, but Gayle also smashed three back-to-back sixes to keep the carnage ongoing.
Eight years later, Chennai Super Kings’ Ravindra Jadeja repeated the same feat in IPL 2021, and it was Harshal Patel who was at the receiving end.
5. KKR’s 10 Straight Wins
In IPL 2014 and IPL 2015, KKR were on a 10-match unbeaten streak, and in between, they won the elusive title under the leadership of Gautam Gambhir. No franchise has more wins on the trot than him, and it is, without a doubt, a special feat considering the competitiveness of the tournament over the years.
6. Virat Kohli’s 976 Run-Tally In IPL 2016
We don’t often talk about what David Warner achieved in IPL 2016—aggregating 848 runs in the season—to take SRH to glory. The reason is simple, Kohli’s extraordinary season. The RCB batsman’s tally read 976, which included four centuries and seven half-centuries.
Credit is due where it is due, and what Kohli did in the IPL 2016 was undoubtedly the best performance ever by a cricketer in any franchise league across the globe.
7. Alzarri Joseph’s 6/12 On IPL Debut
It all happened in Hyderabad when Mumbai Indians took on Sunrisers Hyderabad in a league match of the IPL 2019. Playing his first match after coming in as a replacement for injured Adam Milne, Alzarri Joseph returned 6/12 in his 3.4 overs to help his side defend a below-par 135-run total.
This remains the best bowling figure by anyone in the league, let alone the best performance by a debutant.
8. Amit Mishra Taking Hat-Tricks Thrice In IPL
Hat-trick is an unbelievable achievement, and one has to do a lot of hard work to make that happen. Keeping in mind that IPL is a league where each and every player has been massively skilled, achieving the feat here is a very big deal.
And Amit Mishra, one of the veterans of the league who still plays in the competition, for the Lucknow Super Giants, has made it look ridiculously easy—not once, but three times.
9. AB de Villiers’ 19-Catches Tally In An IPL Season
IPL 2016 is largely cheered about what Kohli and Warner did with their willow. At the same time, there was another flying Protea – AB de Villiers – who took as many as 19 catches in the entire edition. This remains the most catches by an outfielder in a single IPL season.
10. Chris Gayle’s 17 Six In One IPL Match
Not only Gayle smashed a 66-ball 175 not out against Pune Warriors, which still remains the very best T20 knock ever, but also the tall hard-hitting opener smacked as many as 17 sixes in that blazing knock to get there. This tally of sixes in a single innings is a record, and one has to do plenty of hard work to equal it, let alone break it.
