Tyler Johnson was born in Liberty Lake, Washington on 29th July, 1990 to Ken and Debbie Johnson. He grew up in Spokane suburb of Liberty Lake and completed his graduation from Central Valley High School. His parents met during a rec-league hockey game at Spokane’s Eagle’s Ice-A-Rena. Tyler learned to skate from his mother who was also a skating coach.
Tyler Johnson signed a three-year contract with Tampa Bay Lightning in March 2011. He initially used to play in the AHL and was picked by Lightning for the 2013-14 season, where he got nominated for Calder Memorial Trophy. His performance earned him the spot in the NHL All-Rookie Team. He later helped Tampa Bay Lightning to win the Stanley Cup consecutively in 2020 and 2021 before he was traded to Chicago Blackhawks in 2021.
Johnson missed the 2021–22 season for the Blackhawks due to neck injury and had to undergo surgery. He has played 26 games for the Blackhawks scoring three goals and four assists with a 60.8 faceoff percentage.
