Praveen Kumar was in the Shamli district of Uttar Pradesh on October 2, 1983 to a police head constable Jat Sakat Singh Khaiwal and Murti Devi Khaiwal. He was 19 years old when he was selected for mainstream club cricket and has also graduated by playing first-class cricket. He has also gone through a lot of stress in his career due to which he even attempted suicide. However, he recovered well because of counseling.

Praveen Kumar came in limelight when finished as the joint-highest wicket in the 2004-05 Vijay Hazare Trophy. He also led India Red in the NKP Salve Challenger Trophy in 2007. He finally made his debut for the Indian team in an ODI against Pakistan at the Sawai Man Singh Stadium in Jaipur on 18th November, 2007.
Praveen Kumar was also a part of the Indian team in the historic CommonWealth Bank series in Australia and played an instrumental role in India’s triumph. He was picked by Royal Challenger Bangalore (RCB) for ₹1.20 Crore ahead of the inaugural edition of the IPL in 2008.
