However, his father wanted him to become a cricketer and enrolled Jitesh and his brother Nitesh Sant Gajanan Cricket Academy.

Jitesh Sharma stepped into the professional cricket scene when he made his debut in the 2012-13 Cooch Behar Trophy. He drew the attention of the selectors with his impressive performance of 537 runs from 12 innings, including two centuries and a half-century, that made him break into the Vidarbha senior team for the 2013-14 Vijay Hazare Trophy.  

The wicketkeeper batter had a breathtaking run in the 2015-16 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy where he finished as the third-highest run-getter of the season with 343 runs at a strike rate of 143.51 with one century and two fifties. Jitesh’s attacking approach in the top order caught the attention of Mumbai Indians (MI), who picked him ahead of IPL 2016 at the base price of ₹10 Lakhs. He was a part of the MI squad in 2016 and 2017 but didn’t get to play a single match for them. Jitesh also made his Ranji Trophy debut in the 2015-16 season, but wasn’t able to leave a mark with his performance as he could only score 180 runs in seven matches at an average of 18.

Jitesh Sharma finally got to make his IPL debut after Punjab Kings (PBKS) acquired his services for ₹20 Lakhs ahead of the IPL 2022. He made his debut in the cash-rich league on 3rd April 2022 against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai. He scored 26 runs off 17 balls in that match smashing the rate of sixes. PBKS won the game comfortably by 54 runs by bowling CSK out for 126 runs in 18 overs while defending a total of 180 runs.

Jitesh had a decent season in IPL 2022 where he amassed 234 runs from 12 matches at an average of 29.35 and a strike rate of 163.64. He was retained by PBKS again in IPL 2023, and played as a main wicket-keeper batsman for the franchise in that season amassing 309 runs from 14 matches at an average of 23.77 and a strike of 156.06.

The year 2023 went on to become memorable for Jitesh Sharma as he got his maiden India call for the 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou. He finally made his T20I debut for India on 3rd October 2023 against Nepal at the ZJUT Cricket Field. Hangzhou, Zhejiang.

Jitesh Sharma has played nine T20I matches for India so far, where he has amassed 100 runs from seven innings at an average of 14.28 and a strike rate of 147.05, with 35 being his highest score so far.
