India ends the day with 219 runs after losing 7 wickets. A day with dominant displays by the youngsters, where 20-year-old Shoaib Bashir bagged four wickets and in-form Indian youngster Jaiswal with a brilliant 76.
The second day of the penultimate test began with centurion Joe Root along with Ollie Robinson at the crease, to build up further on their 57-run partnership. Mohammed Siraj with the ball at the other end. Robinson started the scoring with a flick towards the fine leg resulting in a boundary. Continuing the momentum he hit debutant Akash Deep for three consecutive boundaries, subsequently reaching the 50 runs mark. The 30-year-old right-hand batter failed to convert it into a big score as he got caught behind in Jadeja’s over. Capitalising on the momentum Jadeja bagged another wicket in the same over, this time Bashir whose untimed slog catches the leading edge and Rajat Patidar latches onto it. Followed by Anderson who got LWB as Jadeja grabbed his third for the day and fourth of the innings, concluded England’s innings for 353. With Joe Root unbeaten at 122 and debutant Akash Deep with an impressive three wickets on his debut.
Rohit Sharma along with the in-form batter Yashasvi Jaiswal came to open India’s innings hoping for a solid start. Unfortunately, the veteran bowler James Anderson handed a huge blow to the home side by sending captain Sharma to the pavilion for 2 runs. Dealing with the early setback, Jaiswal and Gill stitched a 50-run partnership while displaying some amazing cricketing shots. As the pair were looking comfortable post-lunch Shoaib Bashir clinched Gill’s wicket. The 20-year-old continued his impressive bowling and sent both Patidar and Jadeja in the same session for 17 and 12 runs respectively. Meanwhile, at the other end, Jasiwal stood his ground and continued his impressive form by scoring another half-century. Joined him at the other end, Sarfaraz Khan who had an excellent debut in the previous match scoring back-to-back fifties. At the end of the second session, India was at 131 for the loss of 4 wickets.
Session 3 began with a big blow for the home side as Yashasvi Jaiswal got bowled out by none other than Shoaib Bashir who got his fourth wicket of the day. To pile on to India’s miseries Sarfaraz Khan also walks back to the pavilion after Tom Hartley’s ball took a big edge followed by a brilliant catch from Joe Root. Followed by another quick wicket by Hartley of Ravichandran Ashwin who departs at 1 run. At one point it seemed the whole Indian team would head back to the pavilion by the end of the day but a couple of big shots by Jurel along with steady batting from Kuldeep showed positive intent. As India ends the day with 219 for seven, trailing the visitors by 134 runs at the end of the day.
