Since the 15-member squad for the 2024 T20 World Cup has been announced, there have been many questions arising regarding the selection. The combinations included picking up four spinners to leave a thin pace attack, dropping Rinku and Rahul, and many other things. BCCI’s chief selector, Ajit Agarkar, and Indian captain Rohit Sharma faced the media and answered the tough questions that were raised.
When the captain was questioned about the decision to take four spinners in a fifteen-member squad, he kept the reason secret in a quirky style and told the journalists that he may reveal it in the United States. Going on the same track, another journalist highlighted the fact that the team lacks an off-spinner in the squad. which Rohit raised his hand, indicating that he is an off-spinner too.
He later explained that there were a lot of discussions about whether to have an off-spinner or not. Washington Sundar, Ashwin, and Axar were the names discussed, and Axar got the edge due to his good performance as well as an extra batting option.
It is not the first time that Rohit Sharma has indicated his bowling prowess; after the Asia Cup squad announcement, Agarkar also spoke of Virat Kohli and the skipper’s ability to roll arms. Even Rohit bowled the last over in the league stage game of the 2023 World Cup against the Netherlands.
On being asked about the omission of KL Rahul, Rohit Sharma clearly indicated that they looked at what they needed; Rahul was opening for his franchise, and they were looking for a middle-order wicketkeeper batsman where Sanju was the desired fit.
Ajit Agarkar also explained the decision to not pick Rinku Singh, saying,” Rinku hasn’t done anything wrong. I couldn’t fit him into the 15. He is a travelling reserve; that’s how close it was.”
