The preparations for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2024 are in full swing, as the mega event will get underway in a couple of weeks. Team India will face Ireland in their opening game of the tournament on June 5. Rohit Sharma will be leading the team, with Hardik Pandya as vice captain. This will also be the last assignment for Rahul Dravid as India’s head coach.
Dravid’s tenure is about to end after the upcoming ICC event. That is why the search for the new head coach has started. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has invited applications for the new head coach. Some reports confirm that India are seeking a foreign coach, and names like Stephen Fleming or Ricky Ponting came out. But it looks like a former Indian star can get the nod.

Some media reports confirmed that the BCCI is approaching former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir for the role of India’s next head coach. Notably, Dravid’s tenure ended with the conclusion of the ODI World Cup 2023, but the BCCI extended it for another six months because of the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024. But now, it will end soon, and the Indian board needs someone who can take on his role.
As per the report from ESPN Cricinfo, the BCCI has contacted Gautam Gambhir, who is currently involved in the ongoing TATA IPL 2024. Gambhir is engaged with the two-time champion Kolkata Knight as a mentor and has done pretty well. He has done a great job, and KKR have finished the group stage at the top.
Gambhir is very strong tactically and has a good head on his shoulders. He has taken some good decisions for KKR in the ongoing season, which have benefited the team. Gambhir was a member of India’s T20 World Cup 2007 and ODI World Cup 2011 teams. Though there is still some time but it will be interesting to see who will be India’s next head coach.
