1. Lakshmipathy Balaji (CSK) Hat Trick in IPL: against Kings XI Punjab in IPL 2008
The first one to achieve the feat in the IPL. Former Chennai Super Kings (CSK) player Lakshmipathy Balaji took the first-ever IPL hat-trick by any player in a match against Kings XI Punjab Kings on 10th May, 2008. After posting 181/4 with the help of half-centuries by Subramaniam Badrinath and the skipper MS Dhoni, CSK kept taking regular wickets as Punjab got very far away from the winning target. Now with 19 runs required off the last three balls, Balaji took three consecutive wickets dismissing Irfan Pathan, Piyush Chawla and Vikram Singh respectively as CSK won the game by 18 runs. With this, Laxmipathy Balaji became the first bowler to take a hat-trick in IPL history.
2. Rohit Sharma (DC) Hat Trick in IPL: against Mumbai Indians in IPL 2009
One of the most unexpected names in the list. Indian skipper Rohit Sharma, who is one of the greatest opening batters in modern day cricket has also taken a hat-trick in IPL, that too against a team that he went on to lead to five IPL titles. Playing for Deccan Chargers (DC) in a match against Mumbai Indians (MI) on 6th May, 2009, Rohit took two back-to-back wicket in the last two balls of the 16th over dismissing Abhishek Nayar and Harbhajan Singh respectively when MI were chasing a target of 146 runs. Now coming to bowl the 18th over, Rohit took the wicket of the in-form JP Duminy and completed his IPL hat-trick. After scoring 38 runs with the bat, Rohit registered figures of 4/6 in just two overs with the balls and was awarded Player of the Match in MI’s 19-run victory.
3. Pravin Tambe (RR) Hat Trick in IPL: against Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL 2014
After making his IPL debut for Rajasthan Royals (RR) at the age of 40 years, former cricketer Pravin Tambe justified the statement ‘Age is just a number’ and has drawn inspiration for many. In his short IPL career, Tambe has given so many match-winning performances in the IPL, including the one on 5th May, 2014 when he took a two-ball hat-trick against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in Ahmedabad. Chasing a target of 171 runs, KKR were giving a tough fight to RR and were going neck-to-neck. However, things changed when Tambe dismissed Manish Pandey without even bowling a ball. Coming to bowl the first ball of the 16th over, Tambe bowled a wide ball and Pandey tried to tuck it by stepping out of the crease but missed. After that, the wicket-keeper Sanju Samson did no mistake and cleared the bails in time as Manish Pandey got out without even playing a single ball. Now, Tambe went on to dismiss Yusuf Pathan and Ryan ten Doeschate in the next two balls and became the first player to take a two-ball hat-trick in IPL history. RR won that match by 10 runs.
4. Harshal Patel (RCB) Hat Trick in IPL: against Mumbai Indians in IPL 2021
Playing in the first match of IPL 2021 on 9th April, Royal Challengers Bangalore registered a thrilling 2- wicket victory against Mumbai Indians (MI) with Harshal Patel becoming Player of the Match for his match-winning spell of 5/27. Batting first, MI were 158 for 5 after 19 overs and were looking set to post 170-175 runs on board Kieron Pollard and Krunal Pandya still at the crease. However, Patel spoiled MI’s plans dismissing both Pandya and Pollard respectively in the first two balls of the 19th over. However, the fast bowler didn’t stop there and cleared the bails of Marco Jansen on the very next delivery to complete his IPL hat-trick. Being cherry on top Rahul Chahar got run-out on the last ball as MI lost 4 wickets in the last over scoring just 1 run, giving RCB a target of 160 runs. RCB chased the winning total on the last ball of the innings losing 8 wickets.
5. Yuzvendra Chahal (RR) Hat Trick in IPL: against Kolkata Knight Riders IPL 2022
The next name in the list is Yuzvendra Chahal who took a hat-trick against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) while playing for Rajasthan Royals (RR) at Brabourne stadium on 18th April, 2022. Batting first, RR posted a mammoth 217 for 5 with Jos Buttler’s century. However, chasing 218 runs, KKR were also giving tough fight, but the things after Chahal took four wickets in a single over by conceding just 2 runs. Coming to bowl in the 17th over, Chahal dismissed Venkatesh Iyer in the first ball of the over. After a gap of two balls, he went on to dismiss Shreyas Iyer, Shivam Mavi and Pat Cummins respectively in the next three balls to complete his hat-trick and a five-wicket haul.
