Indian men’s cricket team captain Rohit Sharma opened up on his views on retirement, World Cup final loss and more on Gaurav Kapur’s show, ‘Breakfast with Champions.’
Rohit Sharma has been in the limelight recently after he was stripped off from captaincy by Mumbai Indian’s management. Hardik Pandya who was brought back by the franchise this year was handed the role to lead the five-time champions this campaign. Following this, speculation started brewing over Rohit’s dawn on the cricket field. With the T20 World Cup taking place this year and no added responsibility to lead his franchise, Rohit is expected to focus more on his batting skills in order to improve his performance in this particular format. On asking about his retirement the Hitman dismissed his retirement plan as he is still motivated to win a World Cup with India.
“I haven’t really thought about retirement. But, I don’t know where life takes you. I am still playing well at this point in time – so I am thinking I am going to continue for a few more years and then, I don’t know. I really want to win the World Cup and there is a WTC final in 2025, hopefully, India makes it.”
The Indian Skipper also reflected upon India’s heartbreak in the ODI World Cup final last year. Suffering a heartbreaking defeat in the finals once again at the hands of Aussies in India was a hard pill to swallow. Rohit even gave credit to Pat Cummins and co. for their performance but also highlighted team India’s extraordinary performance throughout the tournament.
“What’s the one thing that can make us lose the World Cup? Not a single thing came to my mind. Because I thought we ticked all the boxes, we were playing good cricket. Confidence was there. We were all supposed to have one bad day and that I guess that was our bad day. Don’t think we played bad cricket in that final, certain things didn’t go our way. But Australia were slightly better than us,” added Rohit.
Rohit’s focus for now would be to overcome from the heartbreaks of 2023 and fully focus on leading team India to its first ICC trophy in more than a decade. Team India will begin their World Cup campaign on 5th June against Ireland, followed by the high voltage India vs Pakistan match on 9th June.
