But there have been some occasions when a batter missed a hundred by just one run. Notably, the IPL has seen nine such innings when a batter got out or remained unbeaten at 99 and missed his hundred by just one run. Players to Miss an IPL Century by one run
1. Suresh Raina – 99* vs SRH in 2013
Suresh Raina scored one hundred in his IPL career, but his second-highest score was 99 not out. He was the first batter to register a 99 in an IPL innings. It came against Sunrisers Hyderabad during the 2013 edition while batting first. CSK posted a big total of 223/3, and Raina, who came out at No. 3, scored 99* off 52 balls, with 11 fours and three sixes. He was on 95 on the last ball and hit a boundary to reach 99. CSK won that game by 77 runs.
2. Virat Kohli – 99 vs DC in 2013
Apart from seven IPL centuries, Virat Kohli has five nervous nineties, including one 99-run score. That came in 2013 against Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) in Delhi. Batting first, RCB scored 183/4 in the first innings. Virat batted at No. 3 and got run out on 99 off 58 balls, with ten fours and four sixes. DC also tried hard but fell short by four runs and lost the game.
3. Prithvi Shaw – 99 vs KKR in 2019
Prithvi Shaw is another player who has yet to score a hundred in the IPL, but his highest IPL score is 99. He scored it against Kolkata Knight Riders in Delhi during the 2019 season. It was KKR that batted first and made 185/8 in 20 overs. In reply, Shaw gave a good start but got out on 99 off 55 balls, with 12 fours and three sixes. DC also reached 185, and the game was tied. Later, DC won the Super over.
4. Chris Gayle – 99* vs RCB in 2019
Chris Gayle had six IPL centuries, which is the most for an overseas batter. But he is the only player who has registered two scores of 99 runs in the IPL. His first came in 2019 while playing for Punjab Kings against his former team, RCB, in Mohali. It came in the first innings, when Gayle remained unbeaten on 99 off 64 balls, with 10 fours and five sixes. PBKS made 173/4, but RCB chased it down to win by 8 wickets.
5. Ishan Kishan – 99 vs RCB in 2020
Ishan Kishan is another Indian batter who has not scored an IPL ton yet but got out once on 99. He had this moment in a tie game against RCB during the 2020 edition. RCB batted first and scored 201/3. In reply, MI was 39/3 in 6.4 overs when Ishan came out to bat at no. 4. He got out at 19.5 overs and scored 99 off 58 balls, with two fours and nine sixes. MI also made 201, and the game was tied. Later, RCB won the Super Over.
6. Chris Gayle – 99 vs RR in 2020
The second 99 for Chris Gayle during the 2020 edition against Rajasthan Royals. It also came in a losing cause, like the first one. PBKS batted first and scored a total of 185/4 in 20 overs. Gayle got out in the 20th over and scored 99 off 63 balls with six fours and 8 sixes. Rajasthan chased down the target in 17.3 overs and made 186/3 to win the game.
7. Mayank Agarwal – 99* vs DC in 2021
Veteran Indian batter Mayank Agarwal has one IPL century and one score of 99 unbeaten so far. It came while playing for Punjab Kings in the 2021 season against Delhi Capitals. It was the game in Ahmedabad, and PBKS scored 166/6 in the first innings. Only skipper Mayank was the lone savior, scoring 99* off 58 with 8 fours and four sixes. But PBKS lost that game as DC made 167/3 in 17.4 overs to win the game.
8. Ruturaj Gaikwad – 99 vs SRH in 2022
Ruturaj Gaikwad also has one innings where he got out on 99 runs and missed a century. He had this against Sunrisers Hyderabad in Pune during the 2022 season. It came in the first innings when CSK scored a total of 202/2 in 20 overs. Gaikwad got out on the 5th ball of the 18th over at 99 off 57 balls, with six fours and six sixes. SRH only reached 189/6 and lost the game by 13 runs.
9. Shikhar Dhawan – 99* vs SRH in 2023
Shikhar Dhawan also registered an unbeaten 99 in the IPL, and he did it against Sunrisers Hyderabad at Rajiv Gandhi Stadium during the 2023 season. Dhawan was the only batter who batted well. He scored an unbeaten 99 off 66 balls, with 12 fours and five sixes. Apart from him, only Sam Curran (25 off 15) scored in double digits. PBKS scored 143/9 and SRH made 145/2 to win the game.
