Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have been one of the most dominating teams in the Indian Premier League (IPL), and are most of the most successful franchises in the history of the tournament. Having won five titles in 2010, 2011, 2018, 2021, and 2023, CSK will be coming to lift their sixth IPL title in 2024 and become the most successful team in the tournament in the captaincy of MS Dhoni.
The defending champions CSK, will kickstart IPL 2024 with a match against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) on 22nd Match at M.A Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. 1. 79/10 against Mumbai Indians in IPL 2013
Chennai Super Kings registered their lowest ever IPL total in a match against Mumbai Indians (MI) at Wankhede Stadium on 5th May, 2013. Batting first, MI posted a total of 139 runs for the loss of 5 wickets. Skipper Rohit Sharma was the top scorer with 39 runs off 30 balls. Coming to chase the winning total, CSK kept losing wickets at regular intervals and were bowled out for just 79 runs in 15.2 overs. MI won the match by 60 runs Mitchell Johnson was awarded Player of the Match for his match-winning spell of 3/27 in three overs.
2. 97/10 against Mumbai Indians in IPL 2022
This was the second time in IPL history when Chennai Super Kings were bowled out under 100 runs, that too against the same team, Mumbai Indians. In the IPL 2022 match between CSK and MI at Wankhede Stadium on 12th May, 2022, CSK were bowled out for just 97 runs in 16 overs. Daniel Sams was the stat MI bowling with 3 scalps by conceding 16 runs in four overs. Chasing 98 runs, MI scored 103 for loss of 5 wickets, winning the match 14.5 overs.
3. 109/10 against Rajasthan Royals in IPL 2008
Chennai Super Kings registered theri third lowest IPL total in a match against Rajasthan Royals (RR) at Sawai Mansingh Stadium on 4th May, 2008. Batting first, CSK were bowled for just 109 runs in 19 overs. Sohail Tanvir was the star with the ball with the figures of 6/14, which was the best figures in the IPL at that time. In reply, RR chased the winning total in 14.2 overs losing 2 wickets.
4. 109/10 against Mumbai Indians in IPL 2019
This is the lowest total Chennai Super Kings have ever posted at their own den Chepauk. In a match between Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings at M.A. Chidambaram Stadium on 26th April, 2019, MI posted a total of 155 runs for the loss of 4 wickets with the skipper Rohit Sharma taking charge with a 67-run knock from 48 balls. Coming to chase the winning total with an immense support from the crowd at their home ground, CSK were bundled out for just 109 runs in 17.4 overs and lost the game by 46 runs. Lasith Malinga took 4 wickets by conceding 37 runs in 3.4 over .
5. 110/8 against Delhi Daredevils in IPL 2012
Playing against Delhi Daredevils (now known as Delhi Capitals) at Arun Jaitley stadium on 10th April, 2012, Chennai Super Kings were restricted to 110/8 in 20 overs while batting first. None of the batter could stay till the last and CSK set a modest target of just 111 runs from 120 balls for the home team. In reply, Delhi chased the winning total in 13.2 overs losing 2 wickets with Kevin Pietersen remaining unbeaten on 43 runs off 26 balls.
6. 112/8 against Royal Challengers Bangalore in IPL 2008
In a match between Chennai Super Kings and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) at Chepauk on 21st May, 2008, RCB posted a total of 126 runs for the loss of 8 wickets. Skipper Rahul Dravid was the top-scorer with 47 runs off 39 balls. For CSK, Albie Morkel took 4 wickets by conceding 32 runs in his spell of four overs. Chasing a low total at their home ground, CSK had a good start with Parthiv Patel and Stephen Fleming adding 60 runs for the first wicket in 9.1 overs. However, after the partnership was broken, CSK kept losing regular wickets and were restricted to 112 runs losing 8 wickets in their 20 overs and lost the game by 14 runs. RCB spinner Anil Kumble was awarded Player of the match for his match-winning spell of 3/14.
7. 112/9 against Delhi Daredevils in IPL 2010
In a match between Chennai Super Kings and Delhi Daredevils at M.A. Chidambaram stadium on 15th April, 2010, CSK couldn’t take advantage of their home ground. Batting first after winning the toss, CSK kept losing wickets at regular intervals and could only reach 112 runs in their 20 overs losing 9 wickets. For Delhi, Ashish Nehra took 3 scalps by conceding 26 runs in four overs. Defending a low target, CSK bowlers gave a tough fightback to Daredevils, as the visitors lost 4 wickets for 38 runs in seven overs. After that, Delhi skipper Gautam Gambhir took charge and scored an unbeaten 57 runs off 56 balls and put an unbeaten partnership of 75 runs with Mithun Manhas for the fourth wicket. Another low score at their home ground against Mumbai Indians. In the opening match of IPL 2012 at Chepauk Stadium on 4th April, Chennai Super Kings were bowled out for just 112 runs in 19.5 overs. Suresh Raina was the top scorer for CSK with 36 runs off 26 balls. For MI, Lasith Malinga, Pragyan Ojha and Kieron Pollard took 2-2 wickets each. In reply, Richard Levi came up with a 35-ball half-century as MI chased the winning total in 16.5 overs losing 2 wickets.
9. 114/4 against Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL 2011
In a match between Kolkata Knight Riders and Chennai Super Kings at Eden Gardens on 7th May, 2011, CSK opted to bat first after winning the toss but couldn’t set up a winning total, In a rain-affected encounter, CSK posted 114 runs for the loss of 4 wickets in their 20 overs. Now chasing the winning total, KKR were at 61/2 after 10 overs, before rain decided to play a spoilsport. As the match couldn’t continue further, KKR won it by 10 runs as per the DLS method.
10. 114/9 against Mumbai Indians in IPL 2020
Playing against Mumbai Indians at Sharjah on 23rd October, 2020, CSK were restricted at 114 runs for the loss of 9 wickets in their 20 overs. For MI, Trent Boult took 4 wickets by conceding 18 runs in four overs. Chasing the winning total, MI found no hurdle as they comfortably scored 116 runs in 12.2 overs without losing any wickets Ishan Kishan and Quinton de Kock scoring 68 runs and 48 runs respectively.
