Ravi Bishnoi is an Indian right-arm leg spinner from Jodhpur, Rajasthan who plays for the Lucknow SuperGiants in the Indian Premier League (IPL). The 23-year-old has been a promising young spinner from India who caught everyone’s attention with his tremendous performance in the 2020 Under-19 World Cup in South Africa, where he finished as the leading wicket taker of the tournament. 

Bishnoi has also shown good form in the IPL and has been a consistent performer with 53 scalps from 52 matches in the cash-rich league at an average of 27.26 and economy rate of 7.59. He has also been able to capitalize on the few opportunities he got for the Indian team in the limited overs format. Bishnoi made his India debut in a T20I against West Indies on 16th February at Eden Gardens in Kolkata.

Ravi Bishnoi Early Life

Ravi Bishnoi was born in the Birami village of Jodhpur, Rajasthan to Mangilal Bishnoi and Sohni Devi on 5th September 2000. He comes from a middle class family and had to face so many difficulties while pursuing his cricketing career. In 2013, along with his friends and two coaches, Bishnoi built a cricket academy in Birami named Spartans Cricket Academy due to lack of cricket facilities in West Rajasthan. Now the academy is producing young talents from all over the state. 

Bishnoi used to travel 20 kms by bicycle from his home to the cricket academy. Initially, he wanted to become a fast bowler and used to deliver medium pace. However, his coach Shahrukh Pathan suggested him to start bowling spin and from there he started as a spin bowler. 

There was a time when Ravi Bishnoi also had to choose between cricket and his studies after he was selected as net bowler for Rajasthan Royals (RR) in 2018 along with his 12th class Board Exams approaching at the same time. Eventually, Bishnoi chose to skip his board exams and joined the RR camp in Jaipur where he caught the attention of some prominent cricket players.

Bishnoi was snubbed from U-16 trials once and for the U-19 trial twice by the selectors. However, his coach insisted the selectors give Bishnoi a second chance where he was finally selected for the Rajasthan Under-19 team. 

Ravi Bishnoi Career

Ravi Bishnoi was selected as a net bowler for Rajasthan Royals (RR) in March 2018 after a recommendation by their Fielding Coach, Dishnat Yagnik. The leg spinner impressed everyone with his bowling and caught the attention of players like Sanju Samson and batting coach Amol Muzumdar who let him play in the practice games. Bishnoi was in contention to play for RR in IPL 2019 but couldn’t make it into the squad as he was neither Under-19 nor played in Ranji till then.

Ravi Bishnoi finally stepped into professional cricket when he made his debut for Rajasthan in a Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy Match against Tamil Nadu in Surat on 21st February 2019. He had a decent outing in that game picking up 2 wickets conceding 20 runs in four overs. 

Bishnoi showed breathtaking form in the 2020 Under-19 World Cup in South Africa where he finished as the highest wicket taker of the tournament with 17 scalps and also became top wicket taker for India in the history of the tournament. The leg spinner took 17 wickets from six matches at an average of 10.64 and an economy rate of 3.48. 

Bishnoi made his IPL debut in 2020 after Punjab Kings (formerly known as Kings Xi Punjab) acquired his services for ₹2 Crore ahead of the season. He played his debut IPL game against Delhi Capitals at the Dubai International Stadium where he dismissed Rishabh Pant as his first-ever wicket in the cash rich league. He played 14 matches in that season taking 12 wickets at an average of 31.33 and an economy rate of 7.37. 

He currently plays for Lucknow Super Giants after the franchise bought him for ₹4 crore ahead of IPL 2022. 

Ravi Bishnoi made his Ranji debut for Rajasthan on 27th December, 2022 against Puducherry. He has picked up 7 wickets in three Ranji games played for Rajasthan so far.. Now, Bishnoi is set to represent another state in Domestic cricket as he will be seen playing for Gujarat in the 2023-24 Ranji Trophy.

Ravi Bishnoi Debut in India Cricket Team

On 16th February 2022, Ravi Bishnoi finally made his debut for the Indian team in a T20I against West Indies at Eden Gardens in Kolkata. The leg spinner was impressive in his debut international game picking up 2 wickets by conceding just 17 runs in four overs. He dismissed Rovman Powell and Roston Chase in that match. Till now, Bishnoi has played 23 T20Is and one ODI match for India with 37 scalps across both formats.
