Another year where IPL’s schedule almost clashes with an ICC event. Starting on June 1, the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024 will take place in the USA and West Indies. But even before its commencement ICT fans already have their eyebrows raised as, the rumoured day for the IPL final will be just 5 days apart from the World Cup opener.
As fans across the country still trying to get over the double heartbreak at the hands of Aussies in the previous year, the news of having another ICC tournament within a week of IPL is worsening it even further.
The flashback of last June’s World Test Championship Final hits back to when the Indian players were fatigued from playing a two-month-long IPL. Captain Rohit Sharma later even accepted that lack of rest and fatigue from the tournament played a role in India’s failure at the WTC Finals.
Recently in an interview, Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin also expressed his concern about India’s lack of silverware in ICC tournaments in the recent past, he also highlighted how the tight-packed schedule leaves them with less time for recovery and preparations.
“We have been on a drought to win ICC trophies for years now and have consistently been knocked out in the semis or finals. And this is yet another year where the ICC T20 World Cup follows the IPL final by just five days, like in the recent past,” said Ashwin on his YouTube channel.
India won their last ICC trophy back in 2013, under MS Dhoni’s captaincy when they lifted the Champions Trophy defeating England.
The IPL is set to begin this Friday, with defending champion Chennai Super Kings facing Royal Challengers Bangalore in Chepauk.
BCCI only declared the schedule for the first 21 matches because of General elections across the country. The elections will be from 19th April to 1st June across various phases, as per the Election Commission. The BCCI is also considering the possibility of hosting the second half of the tournament in UAE. As the election dates are officially out now the remaining fixtures are expected to be out soon with some venue changes.
Fans will be hoping for a change of fortune in the upcoming ICC event for India, till then the grand fest of IPL will be something for the cricketing fans to relish.
