Mumbai Indians (MI) have announced Hardik Pandya as their captain for the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2024. He will replace the former skipper Rohit Sharma who has led MI since 2013. Under Rohit’s captaincy, MI clinched the IPL five times and became one of the most successful franchises in the cash-rich league.
Now, Hardik Pandya is set to take over the captaincy role for MI in the IPL 2024. He has already won four IPL titles with MI and was released by the franchise ahead of IPL 2022. He was picked by Gujarat Titans for IPL 2022 as the skipper and led the franchise to the title in their maiden IPL season. GT also ended as the runners-up in the IPL 2023 under Pandya’s captaincy. The all-round cricketer has ended his stint with GT as they traded him to MI for ₹15 crore ahead of IPL 2024. There were also rumors that MI have picked him to replace Rohit as the captain in the future. Now MI have officially announced him as the skipper for IPL 2024 via social media post.
MI Captains List From 2008 to 2024
Rohit Sharma turned out to be the most successful captain for MI who led the franchise to five IPL titles. Notably, Rohit took over the captaincy during the mid-season in IPL 2013, after the former skipper Ricky Ponting missed the rest of the season after playing a first few matches. He led MI to their maiden title in that season. After that, MI went on to win the trophy in 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2020.

Former Indian cricketer Sachin Tendulkar was the captain of Mumbai Indians in the initial years from 2008 to 2012. He also led MI to their first-ever IPL final in 2010, where they lost against Chennai Super Kings. In 2013, Ricky Ponting took over the leadership role but opted to sit out in mid-season and Rohit Sharma was appointed as the skipper for the rest of the season. Apart from that, Harbhajan Singh, Shaun Pollock, Dwayne Bravo, Kieron Pollard and Suryakumar Yadav have also led MI on multiple occasions.
