The 17th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2024) has come to an interesting stage where Kolkata Knight Riders have made it to the playoffs and three bottom teams have been eliminated. Now there are six teams fighting for the three available spots in the playoffs. Meanwhile, Rajasthan Royals have 16 points, and they looked pretty certain for the next round. It has left two places open now.
There are five teams competing for these places. Notably, 16 points are the criteria for qualifying for the playoffs. In the past, the team with 16 points, irrespective of the NRR, has made it to the next round. But in some seasons, we have seen a team make it to the playoffs with 14 points as well. And we might see this scenario in the ongoing TATA IPL 2024.
IPL 2024: Here’s how RCB and CSK can make it to playoff stage
SRH has the best chance to qualify. They have 14 points and a NRR of +0.406. They have two games to play, and both will be at home. If they can win one match, which looks easier for them, they will jump to 16 points and qualify. Meanwhile, LSG has 12 points and two games to play. They need to win both games to qualify. CSK, who is looking good, has 14 points at a NRR of +0.528. Their last match is on May 18 against Royal Challengers Bengaluru. If they win, they will qualify as well, and RCB will be eliminated.
With a 'Q' to their name, #KKR stand tall at the 🔝 of the points table 💜

Meanwhile, RCB, which was at the bottom of the Points table a week ago, has shown a remarkable comeback with five consecutive wins. They have one more game to win, and if they can win it and get 14 points, they can stand a chance to qualify for the playoffs. But they need to win it by at least 18 runs or chase in 18.1 overs to stand a chance. In that case, they will edge past CSK’s NRR, and CSK might be eliminated. But can it be possible that both RCB and CSK qualify? Yes, there is a possible scenario for it.
For that, Bengaluru need to win against CSK with 18 runs or chase in 18.1 overs. They will go past CSK and will have 14 points. Then, both RCB and CSK will have 14 points each. But SRH needs to lose their last two matches, which are against GT and PBKS, and they will end up with 14 points and a NRR weaker than CSK and RCB. Meanwhile, LSG and DC, whether they get to 14 points or not, their NRR is worse, which won’t let them qualify. In that case, with a better NRR, CSK and RCB will make the playoffs and will face each other in the eliminator.
