Rain washes Gujarat’s playoffs hope, as they became the third team after Punjab Kings and Mumbai Indians to have been eliminated from this year’s IPL.
The 2022 champions were hoping to keep their chance alive for this year’s playoffs by securing a home win against KKR. But a rainy evening led to both teams getting a point each after the match was called off. Which means, the Shubman Gill-led side can now only reach 13 points (if they win their last match) which won’t be enough to secure them a ticket to the playoffs.
Teams still in the Playoffs Race
With three teams eliminated and Kolkata Knight Riders securing a top 2 finish, there are three spots yet to be filled with six teams in contention.
- Rajasthan Royals: Currently sitting second in the points table with 16 points from 12 games, they have already put one foot in the playoffs. They need to win one out of their remaining two matches to confirm their spot.
- Chennai Super Kings: Amassing 14 points from 13 games, the five-time champions need to win their last match against RCB to keep their fate in their own hands.
- Sunrisers Hyderabad: Currently sitting fourth in the table, the team has two games in hand. Both against eliminated sides, Gujarat and Punjab. Securing a win in either of their fixtures might do the trick for them. NRR( Net Run Rate) will come into play if they fail to win both.
- Royal Challengers Bengaluru: Currently sitting fifth in the table, their last game against CSK is must win. They have to win the match with a big margin and hope the other team’s results go in their favour.
- Lucknow Super Giants: With two games remaining with 12 points in hand, LSG can secure qualification if they win both of their remaining matches. With an NRR of -0.77, the team need to secure at least one large-margin victory.
Playoffs will start from 21st May, Qualifier 1(21st May) and Eliminator(22nd May) will be played at Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad. Qualifier 2(24th May) and Final(26th May) will be played at Chepauk.
