The ICC Cricket World Cup is around the corner. The quadrennial event is scheduled to be held in India between 5th October and 19th November. With 10 teams from all over the world, the intensity of the competition will be at its peak. One of the most prestigious tournaments held by the ICC, the spectators eagerly wait to experience the thrill and drama it unleashes.
India has hosted the biggest ICC event on three occasions in 1987, 1996 and 2011, however, the hosting remained partial in all of them. This year, the country will single-handedly host the entire tournament at its 10 most iconic venues.
The tournament has borne some of the most interesting rivalries since its inception. In nearly 2 months, 48 matches will add fuel to these fiery rivalries.
ICC World Cup 2023: Most fours in 2023
The tournament in all its editions, features the most rip-roaring encounters where all the players seek opportunities to carve their fortune and make history. Several impressive moments, like double hundreds, consecutive sixes, and 400+ scores, all of which have been witnessed in this prestigious tournament. The event has encompassed some of the finest and most memorable encounters that are still remembered and relived by the fans.
Patience and composure are considered integral aspects of the game. However, it becomes essential for the batsmen to effectively collect boundaries to keep the scoreboard going. While six-hitting cannot be as frequent as it is in the T20 format, consistent batsmen look to rely on hitting grounded shots to maintain momentum in their innings. Many batsmen over the years have registered records for hitting boundaries in the prestigious tournament.
Former Indian player Sachin Tendulkar holds the record for hitting the highest number of boundaries in World Cup history (241). While the little master is already amongst the top with the number of centuries that he has hit in this quadrennial tournament, there should not be any credit due to these boundaries. Tendulkar, in his 6 World Cup appearances between 1992 and 2011 played 44 innings to achieve this feat
The right-hander is followed by former Sri Lankan skipper Kumar Sangakkara who is second on the list with 147 fours to his name. Sangakkara represented his team in four World Cups to attain this feat.
The record for hitting the highest number of fours might look very enticing. What is equally interesting is the record for hitting the highest number of fours in an innings. Former Kiwi opener Martin Guptill holds the record for hitting the most fours in an innings. Guptill hit 24 fours in his outstanding innings of 237 runs against the West Indies at the 2015 World Cup.
While this is a record that is held for the most fours in an innings, Tilakratne Dilshan of Sri Lanka secures the top spot in hitting the most fours in an over. Dilshan was up against Australia at the 2015 World Cup where he bashed the fast bowler Mitchell Johnson for six consecutive fours in an over.
Although it may seem like a very difficult task for batters to consistently perform well under pressure and score runs, these players have been able to rise to the occasion to solidify their position on the list and finally finish the tournament on a high note. It’s the same as what happens when you hit fours. The batter can score the runs well while building the innings.
