The BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) has announced the Indian squad for the upcoming ODI series against Australia. The three-match series will kickstart on 22nd September at the Punjab Cricket Association stadium in Mohali. It will be a crucial series for both sides ahead of the upcoming ODI World Cup in India starting next month.
This will be India’s final showdown before the World Cup After that, the Men in Blue will be seen in action in the marquee event. However, for the first two ODIs, the management has selected a different squad from the one that will be a part of India’s World Cup campaign. Star batter KL Rahul will lead the Indian side in the first two ODIs, while all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja has been selected as a vice captain. While in the third ODI, the full strength Indian team will be seen in action under the skipper Rohit Sharma, along with Virat Kohli and Hardik Pandya.
The main highlight of the Indian squad is the return of the star off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin in the ODI team after 605 days. Ashwin last featured in an ODI match for India on January, 2022 at the Boland Park against South Africa. Now the 37-year-old has been included again in the ODI squad before the World Cup. Notably, Ashwin is the only second active player after Virat Kohli, who was a part of India’s victorious World Cup campaign in 2011 at their home ground.
However, Ashwin hasn’t been included in India’s main 15-men squad for the World Cup, but now is in the line to replace Axar Patel who suffered a wrist injury during the recently concluded Asia Cup. Along with Ashwin, Washington Sundar is also in line to replace Axar in the World Cup squad and was also a part of the Indian team for the final of the 2023 Asia Cup against Sri Lanka. Axar Patel has been included in the Indian squad for the third ODI against the Aussies, but his availability will totally depend on his fitness updates.
