Indian wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson is currently leading the Rajasthan Royals (RR) in the Indian Premier League (IPL). His side has finished third in the IPL 2024 points table with 17 points after the end of the league stage. They are now gearing up to take on Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in Qualifier 2 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on May 24, Friday.
As his side prepares for the all-important game, Samson shared insights on what he has learned since taking up the captaincy of RR. He describes himself as an evolving skipper who constantly adapts to what’s new. He added that he gained a deeper understanding of human behavior and learned how to manage different individuals.
“Describe myself as a captain as a very evolving captain I think I keep on changing. I keep on adapting to what’s new, and what my team’s requirement is. I’ve captained RR for more than 50 games now. So I think that gives me great experience, a great understanding of human behavior, cricketing behavior. How to manage different individuals and then understanding the different situations of the game,” Samson told on Star Sports.
The 30-year-old went on to say that he wanted to be real and liberated in his role as captain, true to himself as Sanju Samson.
“It’s not won at the last ball of the game; it’s won in different phases. I think now I just want to be real, wanting to be completely free as captain, as Sanju Samson. I’m just not worried about the camaraderie out there. I’m just wanting to be myself and feel for my teammates giving their body, giving their everything to the team so I also feel like I should also not hold back and give everything back to the team as well,” he added.
Samson has been one of the standout performers of RR this season. The Kerala-born cricketer is their second-leading run-scorer and sixth in the list of Orange Cap contenders. He has so far scored 521 runs in 15 games, boasting an impressive average of 52.10 and a strike rate of 155.52.
