Australia’s Glenn Maxwell put on fire at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Tuesday as he scored an unbeaten 201 runs off 128 balls and took the game away from Afghanistan in match number 39 of the ongoing ICC Cricket World Cup 2023. Afghanistan were on the verge of producing the biggest upset of the tournament as they took 7 wickets of Australia for just 91 runs defending a total of 291 runs.
The five-time champions kept losing wickets at regular intervals and were looking to bowled out between 100 – 150 runs. But ‘The Big Show’ Maxwell didn’t give up and single-handedly won the game for Australia with his maiden double-hundred in ODIs and produced one of the biggest comebacks in the ODI World Cup. The 35-year-old also became the first batter to score a double hundred while chasing.
However, Maxwell is not the first batsman who has crossed the 200-run mark in the marquee event. Before him, two players had reached this milestone in the ODI World Cup. Former West Indies cricketer is the first batter to cross 200 runs in an innings during the 2015 World Cup. The star batter smashed 215 runs off 147 balls as West Indies posted 372 runs for the loss of 2v wickets and went on to win the match by 73 runs.
The next player to add his name to the list is the New Zealand opener Martin Guptill who scored an unbeaten 237 runs off 163 balls against West Indies in the Quarter-final of the 2015 ODI World Cup.
Talking about the overall record, a total of nine players have scored 11 double centuries in ODI cricket so far. Former Indian cricketer Sachin Tendulkar was the batter to enter the list after he scored an unbeaten 200 runs against South Africa in Gwalior in 2010. On he other hand, India skipper Rohit Sharma has the most double centuries in ODIs and is also the highest individual scorer in an ODI innings. The veteran batter has three ODI double centuries to his name with 264 being his highest score.

Australia’s Glenn Maxwell smashed an unbeaten 201 runs off 128 balls from the situation when Australia lost 7 wickets for just 91 runs while chasing 292 runs against Afghanistan during the 2023 World Cup fixture at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai and gave Australia a famous win from the jaws of defeat.

Chris Gayle’s 215 against Zimbabwe: 2015 World Cup
Former West Indian great Chris Gayle entered into the elite of cricketers with double centuries in ODI and also became the first batter to achieve the milestone in a World Cup event. During the Group B match of the 2015 World Cup against Zimbabwe at Manuka Oval, the left-handed-batter scored 215 runs off 147 balls as West Indies posted 372 runs losing 2 wickets in their 50 overs. He was accompanied by Marlon Samuels who scored an unbeaten 133 runs off 156 deliveries. In reply, Zimbabwe were bowled out for 289 runs and the Windies won the game by 73 runs
Martin Guptill’s 237* against West Indies: 2015 World Cup Quarter Final
The next name in the list is of the New Zealand batter Martin Guptill who scored a double ton in the same edition against the same team whose player achieved the same in the tournament earlier. During the quarter-final of the 2015 World Cup in Wellington, Guptill smashed an unbeaten 237 runs off 163 runs against West Indies as New Zealand posted 393 for 6. In reply, West Indies were bowled out for 250 runs and New Zealand won the match by 143 runs to make it into the semi-finals.
