Indian wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson has entered the record books by breaking a long-standing record of former captain MS Dhoni. With his powerful stroke play, Samson has now hit the most sixes by an Indian wicketkeeper in T20 internationals.
Samson reached this milestone during India’s Asia Cup 2025 clash against Sri Lanka, where he scored a quick 39 runs from 23 balls. His knock included three mighty sixes that left the crowd on their feet and also helped India post a strong total.

The Record That Stood for Years
MS Dhoni, who played 85 T20I innings, had struck 52 sixes in his career. Samson, however, surpassed that mark in just 48 innings, proving his ability to clear the ropes with ease.
Here’s a look at the top wicketkeeper six-hitters for India in T20Is:
| Player | Innings | Sixes |
|---|---|---|
| Sanju Samson | 48 | 55 |
| MS Dhoni | 85 | 52 |
| Rishabh Pant | 66 | 44 |
| Ishan Kishan | 32 | 36 |
Samson’s recent form has made him a vital part of India’s middle order. While he earlier opened alongside Abhishek Sharma, the return of Shubman Gill has pushed him down the order. Still, he has adapted well and shown his ability to score quick runs in crunch situations.
His six-hitting ability gives India an extra edge, especially in high-pressure matches. With the Asia Cup 2025 final against Pakistan just around the corner, fans will be expecting another impactful performance from the Kerala batter.
Dhoni power-hitting and finishing skills were considered unmatched for years. For Samson to overtake his six-hitting tally in nearly half the innings shows how dangerous he has become in the shortest format. More importantly, it highlights India’s depth in batting and the rise of a reliable match-winner in the middle order.
