A seasoned cricketer, Brendan Taylor is bound to join Zimbabwe’s squad after his last match against Ireland in 2021. With much much-expected comeback on the cards, the combination of 16 members mentions Taylor for a two-match 50-overs format series against Sri Lanka. The matches will take place on August 29, including August 31, at Zimbabwe’s home ground, Harare Sports Club.
“We are delighted to welcome Brendan back into the fold. His experience and quality are invaluable, especially in pressure situations, and his presence will no doubt lift the dressing room.” An official from the Zimbabwe selection committee said.
Apart from Taylor’s comeback, the fast bowling unit is also uplifted as Blessing Muzarabani will pick up support from Richard Ngarava. Zimbabwe is introducing four new players in the squad – Tony Munyonga, Clive Madande, Brad Evans and uncapped seamer Ernest Masuku. Craig Ervine will lead the team.
The skipper opened up that transitioning from the Test format to the white-ball format is a tough call. Preparing to play against Sri Lanka is the real test. However, being flexible with a planned approach and leveraging home situations is the demand to stay in the competition.
The head coach, Justin Sammons, reflected that switching gears after a typical red-ball tournament will require aligning with the one-day game conditions. With the first ball, the attack should be clear with a notable side like Sri Lanka. Achieving high performance will be feasible if the roles are clear, emphasising every player’s role to stay disciplined to fetch the right outcomes.
