The Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2026 is set to begin with major changes as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) gears up for the much-awaited mega auction later this year. The tournament’s fourth edition is likely to be played in January–February 2026, and preparations are already underway.
According to reports, the mega auction will take place between November 25 and 29, 2025, with franchises required to submit their retained player lists by November 5. The BCCI has issued clear guidelines—each team will get a ₹15 crore purse, with the flexibility to retain up to five players before the auction.
Retention Rules Finalized
Franchises can retain a maximum of five players, but there are restrictions to maintain balance:
- Up to 3 capped Indian players
- Up to 2 overseas players
- Up to 2 uncapped players, though at least one uncapped player is mandatory if all five are retained
If a franchise opts to retain all five players, it must include one uncapped Indian talent in the list.
Purse Deductions and Financial Structure
Each team has been allotted a ₹15 crore purse for the WPL 2026 auction. However, retention will affect the budget directly. The deduction pattern is structured as follows:
- 1st player: ₹3.5 crore
- 2nd player: ₹2.5 crore
- 3rd player: ₹1.75 crore
- 4th player: ₹1 crore
- 5th player: ₹50 lakh
If all five players are retained, ₹9.25 crore will be deducted from the team’s purse, leaving ₹5.75 crore for the auction.
Right to Match (RTM) Cards Introduced
For the first time in WPL history, the Right to Match (RTM) rule will be introduced. This allows a franchise to buy back a former player by matching the highest bid made by another team during the auction.
Teams can use up to five RTM cards, depending on the number of retained players. For instance:
- If 4 players are retained → 1 RTM available
- If 3 players are retained → 2 RTMs
- If 2 players are retained → 3 RTMs
This system is expected to add more strategy and competition to the mega auction.
Not all franchises are happy with the idea of a complete squad overhaul. According to sources, Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bangalore, and Delhi Capitals—teams that have built strong cores over the past three seasons—wanted limited changes. Meanwhile, Gujarat Giants and UP Warriorz, who have struggled to reach the finals, strongly supported the mega auction to rebuild their teams.
A WPL official commented, “The goal is to maintain balance across all five teams. Stronger competition means a stronger league. However, we also understand the importance of letting teams retain their core.”
WPL 2026 Schedule and Outlook
While the official schedule is yet to be released, BCCI sources have confirmed that WPL 2026 will likely follow a January–February window, continuing the format’s successful run.
The 2026 edition will be the first WPL mega auction since its inception, marking a new chapter for the women’s league. With retention strategies, RTM cards, and a fresh ₹15 crore purse, fans can expect high drama, bold bids, and franchise rivalries to reignite ahead of another exciting season of women’s cricket.
