Asia Cup 2025 witnessed another controversy during the Pakistan vs UAE group-stage match when umpire Ruchira Palliyaguruge was struck on the head by a throw from Pakistan wicketkeeper Mohammad Haris. The incident forced the umpire to leave the field, and former Pakistan captain Wasim Akram’s on-air reaction sparked outrage among fans.
The dramatic episode unfolded during the powerplay overs of UAE’s innings. Haris, while returning the ball without checking his surroundings, accidentally hit umpire Palliyaguruge on the back of the head. The impact left the umpire visibly shaken, and medical staff rushed onto the field. Despite undergoing a concussion test, Palliyaguruge was unable to continue and was replaced by the fourth umpire, Ghazi Sohail.
Haris immediately realized his mistake and went over to apologize to the injured umpire, showing concern for his well-being. Fellow Pakistan cricketer Saim Ayub was also seen checking on the umpire, who was eventually escorted off the field for further treatment.
Wasim Akram Comment Sparks Backlash
While commentating on the match, legendary Pakistan fast bowler Wasim Akram reacted to the incident with the words: “What a throw, straight on target.” Although said in surprise, the remark did not sit well with viewers.
Fans on social media quickly criticized Akram, calling his comment insensitive. One user wrote: “A Pakistani fielder hit the umpire on the head, and Wasim Akram said ‘bullseye.’ This is not humor—it’s disappointing and disgusting.”

The backlash has led to a debate online, with many arguing that legends like Akram should choose their words more carefully during serious on-field accidents.
Despite the incident, Pakistan went on to defeat UAE by 41 runs, securing their place in the Super Four stage of the Asia Cup 2025. Fakhar Zaman fifty and Shaheen Afridi’s quickfire 29 helped Pakistan set a total of 146. In reply, UAE folded for just 105 runs.
However, the game will likely be remembered less for the result and more for the bizarre and unfortunate umpire injury, followed by Akram’s controversial commentary.
