The ICC Men T20 World Cup 2026 is getting closer, and a major update regarding the tournament venues has now been confirmed through multiple reports. The mega event—scheduled from 7 February to 8 March 2026—will be jointly hosted by India and Sri Lanka, with matches spread across key cities in both countries.
According to early details, Ahmedabad Narendra Modi Stadium will once again take centre stage. The world’s largest cricket stadium is expected to host both the opening match and the grand final, just like the 2023 ODI World Cup.
Mumbai to Host One Semi-Final; India–Pakistan Knockouts Likely in Sri Lanka
As per reports, Mumbai Wankhede Stadium has been finalised to host one of the semi-finals. If India qualifies for the semis, there is a strong possibility they will play at Wankhede—one of India’s most iconic cricket venues.
However, if the knockout features India vs Pakistan, the match will not be played in India due to political tensions. Instead, the Ind-Pak semi-final or final (if it happens) is likely to be hosted in Colombo, Sri Lanka.
Similarly, Pakistan will play all their group-stage matches in Sri Lanka, avoiding fixtures within India.
Five Indian Venues Likely Finalised
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has proposed hosting matches across five major Indian cities:
- Ahmedabad – Opening match & Final
- Mumbai – Semi-final
- Delhi – Group-stage matches
- Chennai – Group-stage matches
- Kolkata – Group-stage matches
Bengaluru is expected to host select warm-up games, either at the Chinnaswamy Stadium or the Centre of Excellence (CoE), depending on weather and facility readiness.
Tournament Schedule to Be Released Soon
The ICC is expected to release the full schedule shortly. As per internal discussions, the event will be conducted in fewer cities than the 2023 World Cup, ensuring better logistics and higher-quality pitch management. Each venue is likely to host a minimum of six matches.
With India entering the tournament as the defending champions—after winning the 2024 T20 World Cup under Rohit Sharma – the pressure will be high on new captain Suryakumar Yadav, vice-captain Shubman Gill, and head coach Gautam Gambhir to defend the title on home soil.
Sri Lanka to Host Key High-Pressure Matches
Sri Lanka will play a crucial role as the neutral venue:
- Pakistan’s entire campaign will be held in Sri Lanka.
- If Sri Lanka reaches a semi-final, the match will be hosted in Colombo.
- India vs Pakistan knockout (semi-final or final) will also be shifted to Sri Lanka.
This co-hosting arrangement ensures smooth tournament operations while respecting the political sensitivities between India and Pakistan.
With massive venues, elite competition, intense rivalries, and global attention, the T20 World Cup 2026 is shaping up to be one of the biggest cricketing events ever hosted in the subcontinent.
The opening match in Ahmedabad and the semi-final at Wankhede promise electrifying atmospheres, while Sri Lanka’s role adds a strategic layer to the event geography.
Fans across India and the world now await the official ICC schedule – expected to be released very soon.
