Just a few left for the start of the 17th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) and the fans are enthralled to witness the biggest T20 League in the world. However, a big update is coming ahead of IPL 2024, where the BCCI will be introducing the Smart Replay System in the upcoming season for quicker and more accurate reviews. The main motive of this new system is to increase the accuracy of the decision and help the third umpire to give a fast decision.
According to a report by ESPN Cricinfo, In a smart replay system, the third umpire will receive direct inputs from the Hawkeye operators, and there will be no involvement of the Television broadcast Director in between. Earlier, the TV Umpire used to get inputs from the Hawk-Eye operators, with the TV Director as a mediator, which was a time taking process and sometimes, the result was not even that accurate, leaving the fans puzzled.
Now, under the new technology, the TV Umpire will directly contact the Hawk-Eye operators who will be sitting in the same room. The biggest advantage of this technology is that now the Umpire will have access to the multiple visuals, including split-screen images. With the help of split-screen, the TV Umpire will now be able to see two different angles of the image helping them to take quick and accurate decisions that would leave no confusion among fans. For example, If a fielder takes a catch mid-air near the boundary line, the third empire can take the advantage of Split screen and can look at both the angles of the exact moment where the fielder takes a catch and his feet if they are near the boundary rope at the same time.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) conducted a two-day workshop on this new Smart Replay system with about 15 umpires, from India and overseas. The new system will come in effect right from 22nd March with an opening match of the season between Chennai Super Kings and Royal Challengers Bangalore at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
