Team India’s vice-captain Shubman Gill is facing tough questions as his rough patch in T20 internationals continues. Ahead of the 4th T20I against Australia, Gill’s form has become one of the biggest talking points in Indian cricket.
The 25-year-old, known for his elegant stroke play, has looked completely off-colour in the shortest format. In his last 10 T20Is, Gill has scored less than 200 runs, averaging below 20, raising serious concerns for the team management.
Only 184 Runs in Last 10 T20Is
Gill’s recent numbers paint a worrying picture:
- Last 10 T20Is: 184 runs
- Average: 18.4
- Asia Cup 2025: 127 runs in 7 matches (avg 21.16)
- Australia T20Is: 57 runs in 3 innings
Despite being India’s T20 vice-captain, Gill has failed to give strong starts, putting extra pressure on the middle order.

Australia Series: A Missed Opportunity So Far
Gill had a promising start in the first T20I, scoring an unbeaten 37, but rain ended the game early. Since then, his form dipped sharply:
- 2nd T20I: 5 (10 balls)
- 3rd T20I: 15 (12 balls)
With only two games left in the series, Gill has limited chances to regain confidence.
Will Gautam Gambhir Step In?
Head coach Gautam Gambhir, who has backed Gill strongly — even supporting his rise as Test and ODI captain — was seen having a long conversation with the young opener before the 4th T20I.
Gambhir is known for his strict, performance-based approach, and experts believe Gill may need one strong knock to secure his spot before selectors consider alternatives.
India’s other opener, Abhishek Sharma, has been in good touch, contrasting Gill’s struggles. With the competition for top-order spots getting tougher, today’s match becomes crucial for Gill’s T20 future.
The spotlight will be firmly on him as India take on Australia in the 4th T20I on 6 November.
