India suffered a double blow in the opening Test against South Africa—not only did they lose the match by 30 runs, but captain Shubman Gill was forced off the field with a neck injury and later admitted to a Kolkata hospital. Now, a major update on his fitness has finally arrived.
Gill has been discharged from Kolkata Woodlands Multispeciality Hospital, but he is still not fully fit, and doctors have strictly advised him to rest for the next few days. His availability for the second Test in Guwahati (starting 22 November) remains uncertain.
How the Injury Happened
On Day 2 of the Kolkata Test, Shubman Gill hit a boundary off Simon Harmer but immediately clutched his neck in severe pain. Despite on-field treatment from the physio, he could not continue and retired hurt on 4 runs.
A few hours later, his discomfort increased, and he was stretchered into an ambulance and shifted to the hospital for detailed scans. Gill did not bat in India’s second innings either.
Medical Report: Ligament Injury Confirmed
After reviewing the scans, BCCI medical panel head Dr. Dinshaw Pardiwala confirmed that Gill has suffered an inter-spinous ligament injury — a sensitive ligament between the neck vertebrae.
Doctors have advised:
- 48–72 hours of complete rest
- Medication and controlled movement
- No physical strain
- Continuous monitoring at the team hotel
Gill will be tested again after two days, after which the team management will decide whether he can travel and play.
CAB President Sourav Ganguly visited Gill on Sunday to check on his recovery. According to reports, Gill was stable but still in visible discomfort and advised to avoid sudden movement.

Vice-captain Rishabh Pant will lead again if Gill fails the fitness test.
India lost the opening Test by 30 runs after collapsing for 93 in the fourth innings while chasing 124. South Africa now lead the series 1–0, and Gill’s injury has added more pressure before a must-win match in Guwahati.
Shubman Gill’s discharge from the hospital is positive news, but his recovery timeline suggests that India may have to move ahead cautiously. With the series on the line, the Indian captain’s fitness remains a major concern, and fans will hope he recovers in time for the crucial second Test.
