Team India’s middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer is set to remain out of cricket for a long period after suffering a serious spleen injury during the ODI series against Australia. The injury, which happened while taking a catch in the third ODI at the Sydney Cricket Ground, turned out to be far more dangerous than initially expected. The internal bleeding was severe, and Iyer even required an emergency medical procedure.
While he has now returned home and is recovering, his comeback to international cricket looks distant. According to fresh updates, the 30-year-old will need at least two more months of rest before doctors can reassess his condition.
What the Latest Medical Update Reveals
Recently, Shreyas underwent an ultrasonography (USG) scan at his home. The report was sent to India’s top sports surgeon Dr. Dinshaw Pardiwala, who is monitoring his recovery.
The scan does show signs of healing, but doctors have clearly advised:
- No training
- No gym workouts
- No cricket-related activity
- Complete rest for now
A second USG scan will be done after two months, and only then will doctors decide whether Shreyas can begin rehab at the NCA’s Centre of Excellence (COE) in Bengaluru.
Reports confirm that Shreyas Iyer will not be available for:
- South Africa ODI Series (starting 30 November 2025)
- New Zealand ODI Series (January 2026)
Since his rehab will begin only after the next medical scan, Iyer will not recover in time for either tour.
IPL 2026 Participation Also in Doubt
Shreyas Iyer’s biggest challenge will be regaining fitness before the IPL 2026 season. Doctors believe that his spleen injury is severe enough to keep him out of competitive cricket for 4–5 months, which puts his IPL season at serious risk.
- If his January rehab starts smoothly → he may return midway through IPL.
- If recovery is slower → he may miss entire IPL 2026.
This is a major setback for his franchise and also for his dream of making a comeback into India’s T20 World Cup 2026 squad.
The incident occurred during Australia’s innings in the Sydney ODI. Shreyas jumped forward to take a catch off Alex Carey but fell awkwardly on the ground. He was in immediate pain and could not stand up. BCCI’s medical team quickly rushed him to the hospital where internal bleeding was detected. The injury required urgent medical attention, and he was kept under observation for multiple days before being discharged.
Shreyas Iyer has been one of India’s most dependable middle-order batters in ODIs. His absence creates a major gap ahead of several important assignments. With the T20 World Cup approaching next year, this injury might derail his chances of being part of the squad.
