What Happened During the Match
The injury occurred during the 34th over of Australia’s innings when Alex Carey attempted an aerial shot off Harshit Rana’s bowling.
ielding at backward point, Shreyas Iyer sprinted back and completed a stunning catch with a full-stretch dive. However, he landed awkwardly on his left ribs, causing severe internal pain.
Following the incident, Iyer was seen clutching his side in discomfort and was immediately taken off the field. Subsequent scans revealed an injury to his spleen, leading to internal bleeding, which required minor surgery.
According to the BCCI’s medical report, doctors quickly identified the internal bleeding and performed a minor surgical procedure to stop it.
Post-surgery, Iyer was kept under observation in intensive care for a short period before being moved to a general ward.
The board’s medical team, in consultation with experts from both India and Sydney, has confirmed that his recovery is progressing well.
“His condition is now stable, and he is recovering well under the supervision of the BCCI medical team and local specialists,” the statement added.
Although discharged, Iyer will continue his rehabilitation in Sydney for a few more days before returning to India. He will only fly back once doctors deem him fit to travel by air.
The BCCI thanked the medical professionals involved in his treatment, saying,
“We express our sincere gratitude to Dr. Kourosh Haghighi and his team in Sydney, and Dr. Dinshaw Pardiwala in India, for providing the best possible care to Shreyas.”
Iyer’s injury is a significant concern for the Indian team management. The experienced batter has been India’s go-to player at No. 4, known for his composure and ability to anchor the innings.
He had recently returned to form with a brilliant 61-run knock in the second ODI before this unfortunate injury ruled him out of the series.
For now, the priority remains his complete recovery. Sources indicate that his return to action could depend on the medical team’s clearance and further fitness assessments over the coming weeks.
The update on Shreyas Iyer’s health brings much-needed relief to Indian fans and teammates. His quick discharge and positive progress suggest a steady path to recovery. While his return to international cricket may take some time, the BCCI’s proactive medical care ensures that Iyer’s long-term fitness remains the top priority.
