Team India vice-captain Shreyas Iyer, who suffered a serious injury during the third ODI against Australia in Sydney, continues to remain under medical care but is now stable and recovering, confirmed the BCCI through an official statement.
What Happened During the Match
During Australia’s innings at the Sydney Cricket Ground, Iyer dived forward while fielding to complete a catch off Harshit Rana’s delivery. Though he managed to take the catch cleanly, he landed awkwardly on his left lower rib cage, immediately clutching his side in pain. He was soon taken off the field and later admitted to a Sydney hospital for further evaluation.
Official Medical Update from BCCI
According to the BCCI’s latest medical bulletin released by Devajit Saikia, scans revealed a laceration injury to the spleen. The statement added that Iyer is “under treatment, medically stable, and recovering well.”
The BCCI medical team, in consultation with specialists in Sydney and India, is closely monitoring his condition. An Indian team doctor will continue to stay in Sydney with Iyer to oversee his day-to-day progress.
Recovery and Return Timeline
While his condition has improved, medical experts have advised Iyer to remain under observation for several days. Depending on his recovery pace, he may stay in Sydney for a week before being cleared to travel.
Given the nature of the spleen injury, his participation in the upcoming South Africa tour appears uncertain. He is likely to take an extended break from cricket until he regains full fitness.
Iyer’s teammates and fans have flooded social media with messages of support, wishing him a speedy recovery. Known for his resilience and fighting spirit, the 30-year-old is expected to make a strong comeback once declared fit.
