In a shocking turn of events, India ODI vice-captain Shreyas Iyer suffered a severe injury during the third ODI against Australia in Sydney and had to be immediately admitted to a local hospital. The injury, which occurred while taking a catch near backward point, has now been confirmed as an internal spleen injury, and doctors have stated that it could have been life-threatening had medical attention been delayed.
Collapsed in the dressing room after injury
According to reports, Iyer collapsed inside the dressing room shortly after leaving the field and was rushed to the hospital by the BCCI’s medical staff. Scans revealed internal bleeding due to an impact injury below his left rib cage. The BCCI medical team’s swift response proved crucial in preventing a more serious outcome.
A BCCI statement on Monday confirmed,
“Shreyas Iyer sustained an injury to his lower left rib area during the match. He was taken to the hospital for further scans and evaluation. His condition is currently stable.”
Sources further revealed that Iyer had briefly lost consciousness due to the intensity of internal bleeding before receiving immediate medical assistance. Doctors later confirmed that the injury had affected his spleen, an organ vital for blood filtration, making the situation highly critical.
Under medical observation in Sydney ICU
Iyer, 31, spent two days in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for close monitoring. Although his condition has now stabilised, he remains under observation. The BCCI has decided that he will stay in Sydney until fully cleared by the medical experts. A source close to the team said,
“Shreyas is improving, but due to the risk of internal infection from the bleeding, he will be kept under observation for several more days. His condition could have been far worse, but the medical team’s timely intervention made all the difference.”
Reports also suggest that Iyer parents have applied for emergency visas and are expected to fly to Sydney soon to be by his side.
Not part of T20I squad
Shreyas Iyer is not a part of India’s upcoming five-match T20I series against Australia, so the management will focus entirely on his recovery. He is expected to stay hospitalised for at least another week before any discussion about his return to India or rehabilitation begins.
For now, Iyer’s health remains the top priority for both the BCCI and fans worldwide, who have flooded social media with messages of concern and support for the stylish middle-order batter.
