That also didn’t end well with the fans. And the selection committee faced a lot of criticism. However, Shreyas Iyer is back in the spotlight. The Punjab Kings captain is in a race to become the captain of India A for the home series against Australia A.
Australia A will tour India A for two four-day test matches, followed by three unofficial ODI games between September 16 and October 5. The unofficial test will take place at Ekana Stadium in Lucknow, while the three unofficial one-day games will be held at Green Park in Lucknow.

Shreyas Iyer has been knocking on the doors of the Indian team for quite a while now. He was given the chance during the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, and he grabbed it with both hands. Iyer finished the tournament with the most runs for India with several key performances.
His numbers at the domestic level across formats were also impressive. Later in the IPL 2025, he took Punjab Kings to the final after a decade. There were reports that he might play for India in the England tour, which didn’t happen, and he was also not picked for the Asia Cup 2025.
But it seems like the BCCI has understood their mistakes, and they might give Iyer a massive responsibility. However, the BCCI has yet to announce anything and has not revealed the India A squad. But as reported by Cricbuzz, Iyer is “likely to get a prominent role in the side—captaincy or otherwise.”
Australia A are expected to reach India next week, as the tour will begin on September 16. Not just Iyer, the report also confirmed that the selection committee might also consider players like Nitish Kumar Reddy, Sai Sudharsan, and Abhimanyu Easwaran. Notably, Easwaran has immense experience leading the India A side.
Meanwhile, with good performances in the ongoing Duleep Trophy, Rajat Patidar, Ruturaj Gaikwad, and N. Jagadeesan can also be in the mix. That Australia A tour can give a great platform to these players to showcase their skills and impress the selectors.
