Nepal ace leg-spinner Sandeep Lamichhane was caught in controversy during the recent Unity Cup T20I series against West Indies in Sharjah. The Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) suspended him for the final two matches after he withdrew from the first T20I just 15 minutes before the toss, citing that he was “not in the right space” to play.
In its official statement, CAN said Lamichhane’s last-minute decision had a serious impact on team management, fellow players, and Nepali cricket overall. Acting on the recommendation of the coaching staff, the board decided to bench the 25-year-old spinner for the remainder of the series.
Interestingly, Nepal scripted history in his absence. They won the opening match by 19 runs and then hammered the West Indies by 90 runs in the second T20I to clinch their first-ever series win against a Full Member nation. The Caribbean side pulled one back in the final game, winning by ten wickets, but the series result (2-1) marked a watershed moment for Nepali cricket.
What Led to the Suspension?
Reports suggest that Lamichhane’s sudden pull-out before the first match created chaos in the dressing room. The team management felt blindsided, as he was expected to play a crucial role in the spin-friendly conditions of Sharjah. His decision prompted CAN to take stern action, emphasizing professionalism and discipline in international cricket.

Future with Nepal Still Intact
Despite the disciplinary action, Lamichhane’s international career with Nepal is not over. CAN has confirmed that the spinner will remain in the squad for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Asia & East Asia Pacific Qualifiers in Oman, starting October 8.
Nepal are placed in Group B alongside Japan and Kuwait. The top two teams from each group will progress to the Super Six stage, where the top three finishers will secure qualification for the 2026 ICC T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka.
The suspension of Sandeep Lamichhane highlights how much discipline and timing matter at the highest level of cricket. While his absence didn’t stop Nepal from achieving a historic series win against West Indies, the situation serves as a reminder that even star players must align with team responsibilities. All eyes will now be on Lamichhane in Oman—where fans hope he channels his energy into wickets rather than controversy.
