One of New Zealand greatest-ever batters, Ross Taylor, has announced a sensational return to competitive cricket — but not for the Black Caps. The 41-year-old will represent Samoa in the upcoming Asia-East Asia Pacific T20 World Cup 2026 Qualifiers, to be held in Oman from October 8.
This move marks a special moment in Taylor career as he chooses to honor his Samoan heritage by playing under his chiefly title Leaupepe Luteru Ross Poutoa Lote Taylor.
Taylor made the announcement via Instagram, writing:

📣 Coming out of retirement
It’s official – I’m proud to announce that I’ll be pulling on the blue and representing Samoa in cricket.
This is more than just a return to the game I love — it’s the huge honour to represent my heritage, culture, villages, and family.
I’m excited for the opportunity to give back to the game, join the squad, and share my experience on and off the field.
Time to get back out there – #685 to the world!
CHEEEHOOO! 🇼🇸 🌏
He added that this comeback is about giving back to the game and sharing his vast experience with the Samoan squad, both on and off the field.
Taylor qualifies to represent Samoa through his late mother, Lote, who was born there. After completing the mandatory three-year stand-down period following his last international match for New Zealand in April 2022, he became eligible to play for a second international side.

Taylor was part of the New Zealand squad that won the inaugural ICC World Test Championship in 2021 and has several match-winning knocks across formats.
Samoa’s Squad and Group Details
Taylor joins a 15-member Samoan squad captained by Caleb Jasmat. Another big inclusion is all-rounder Sean Solia, who brings valuable domestic experience from New Zealand.
Samoa’s Fixtures in Group 3 (Asia-Pacific Qualifiers):
- vs Oman – October 8, 2025
- vs Papua New Guinea – October 10, 2025
The top two teams from each group will advance to the Super Six stage, and the top three sides from there will qualify for the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 to be held in India and Sri Lanka.
Why This Comeback Matters
Taylor’s inclusion is more than just a cricketing boost — it is a symbolic moment for Pacific cricket. His presence:
- Brings international experience (450 matches) to the relatively young Samoan team.
- Inspires cricketers of Pacific heritage to pursue the sport at the highest level.
- Adds depth and stability to Samoa’s batting order, which has lacked big-match experience.
Samoan all-rounder Sean Solia praised the move, saying:
“Having Ross Taylor in the squad is an incredible boost for the team. To share a dressing room with such a cricketing legend is a true career highlight. Hopefully, his presence will translate into a successful qualifier tournament.”
Even after retirement, Taylor has stayed active, playing in legends tournaments in India and Sri Lanka. He said he took time to prepare his body for the challenge:
“I didn’t want to just turn up the week before and see what happens. I trained for a couple of months to see how the body reacted. Hopefully, it’s good enough to contribute.”
Ross Taylor decision to represent Samoa is a unique chapter in his legendary career. If Samoa qualifies, fans could witness the extraordinary sight of Taylor facing his former teammates from New Zealand at the T20 World Cup 2026 — a fitting finale to one of cricket’s most decorated careers.
