India are all set to begin their campaign in the 2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup on June 5, Wednesday, as they lock horns with Ireland at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York.
As India set to begin their campaign, all eyes are on their captain Rohit Sharma who can accomplish several records in the tournament. The 37-year-old batter is widely regarded as one of the most successful batters in the history of T20 cricket. He is just 37 runs away from completing 1,000 runs in the prestigious event. The veteran opener is currently sitting fourth in the tally of most runs with 963 runs in 39 games, boasting an average of 34.39 and a strike rate of 127.88. Ace India batter Kohli (1,141) and Mahela Jayawardene (1,016) are the only players who have scored 1000 runs in the event thus far. Moreover, Rohit holds the record for most caps in the history of the competition (39 games).
Apart from this, Rohit can accomplish several records in the competition. He is just 26 runs away from reaching 4,000 runs in the T20I format. Kohli is leading the list with 4037 runs while Pakistan skipper Babar Azam has thus far scored 4023 runs, the only batter who has breached the 4000-run mark. In addition, Rohit is the most capped player in T20Is, having appeared in 151 games.
Rohit can reach the record of 200 maximums in the T20I format if he hits 10 more sixes in the ongoing competition. He has so far scored 190 sixes in the format. Meanwhile, New Zealand star batter Martin Guptil trails behind Rohit with 173 maximums. Additionally, Rohit needed to hit just three maximums to achieve the record of 600 sixes in international cricket, the most by any batter.
In addition, Rohit is on par with the legendary MS Dhoni as India’s most successful captain in the T20I format, both having 42 wins. The 37-year-old just needed one more victory to elevate to the top spot. Moreover, Rohit has thus far played 54 games as India’s T20I captain while Dhoni has led the team 72 times.
