Former Indian cricketer and two-time IPL champion Robin Uthappa has suggested major changes to the Indian Premier League (IPL). According to him, the league has matured enough and should now move beyond the traditional auction model. Instead, he wants the IPL to adopt a draft system, introduce a full-year trade window, and even extend the league to six months.
Uthappa shared these views on his YouTube channel, saying that the IPL needs to evolve with time and step out of the “start-up mindset” it has been following since its launch in 2008.
“End the Auction System,” Says Uthappa
Uthappa believes the auction model, which has been the backbone of the IPL for 18 editions, is now outdated. He strongly feels that a draft system – like other global leagues – would make IPL teams more stable and create deeper fan loyalty.
He said:
“Stop the auction and keep the trade window open throughout the year. Bring in a draft and end the auction. I said the same even when I was playing.”
Uthappa added that the auction seems too dependent on TV entertainment value, and a draft could also provide high excitement on television while giving teams better planning freedom.
Six-Month IPL? Uthappa Says It’s Time
Another bold suggestion from Uthappa is to turn the IPL into a six-month-long league. Currently, the tournament runs for about two and a half months, typically from late March to May.
He believes a longer league would not only increase viewer engagement but also open the door for international cricket to be played in between.
He explained:
“IPL should be a six-month league. You can have international matches in between. The league needs to grow now.”
Uthappa feels that with its global popularity and massive fan base, IPL is ready to operate on a much larger scale.
Robin Uthappa has been associated with the IPL since its first season. He has played 205 IPL matches, scoring 4952 runs at a strike rate of 130.35, and has been part of title-winning teams with Kolkata Knight Riders (2014) and Chennai Super Kings (2021).
His experience makes his opinion significant, and his suggestions have sparked fresh discussions among fans and experts about the league future.

Big Trades Ahead of IPL 2026 Auction
His comments also come at a time when teams are preparing for the IPL 2026 Mini Auction, set to take place on December 16 in Abu Dhabi. Even before the auction, teams have made high-profile trades most notably:
- Sanju Samson → Chennai Super Kings
- Ravindra Jadeja + Sam Curran → Rajasthan Royals
Player fees (from your reference):
- Sanju Samson: ₹18 crore
- Jadeja: ₹14 crore (revised)
- Sam Curran: ₹2.4 crore
These moves have already generated buzz, making Uthappa comments even more relevant.
Robin Uthappa demand to replace the IPL auction with a draft system and extend the league to six months has opened a new debate about the tournament future. As IPL continues to grow in global popularity, his suggestions reflect how the league could move towards a more modern, franchise-style model adopted by other international sports.
