In a major development in the Indian Premier League (IPL) landscape, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) could soon see a change in ownership. The franchise, currently owned by Diageo Great Britain, is reportedly exploring the sale of its stake, with six prominent parties showing interest in buying one of India’s most followed cricket teams.
RCB Valued at USD 2 Billion
According to multiple reports, Diageo is open to selling either a majority or minority share, with the franchise valued around USD 2 billion. However, the deal’s finalization may depend on Diageo’s Indian subsidiary, which is reportedly not in favor of the sale. Two international investment banks, including Citi, have been tasked with advising on the potential transaction.
Who Are the Interested Buyers?
The list of potential buyers reads like a who’s who of India’s corporate elite. Among those reportedly in talks with Diageo are:
- Adar Poonawalla, CEO of the Serum Institute of India, who has openly expressed his interest on social media.
- Adani Group, which previously came close to securing the Ahmedabad franchise in 2022.
- Parth Jindal, via JSW Sports, who currently co-owns Delhi Capitals and would need to sell his stake to comply with IPL ownership rules.
- A Delhi-based industrialist with diversified business interests.
- Two U.S.-based private equity firms also evaluating the opportunity.
Why Is Diageo Selling?
Reports suggest that rising operating costs and the recent decline in IPL’s brand valuation—linked to the ban on real-money gaming sponsors and broadcaster consolidation—have influenced Diageo’s decision. The company’s primary focus remains in the liquor industry, and maintaining a cricket franchise has become increasingly expensive.
RCB, one of the most popular IPL teams with a massive fan base, recently lifted their maiden title in 2025. However, the off-field uncertainty now adds a new twist to their journey.
If the sale goes through, it will mark one of the biggest franchise transactions in IPL history, potentially reshaping the business dynamics of the league once again.
