Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has been ruled out of the Big Bash League (BBL) 2025-26 after sustaining a shoulder injury during training in Chennai. The 39-year-old was set to make history as the first capped Indian male cricketer to feature in the BBL after signing a landmark deal with Sydney Thunder, but the injury has now ended those plans.
According to reports, Ashwin suffered a partial rotator cuff tear while preparing for the Hong Kong Sixes tournament. What was initially considered a minor niggle turned out to be more serious after medical scans. His recovery is expected to take 8–10 weeks, ruling him out for the entire BBL season, which runs from December 14, 2025, to January 25, 2026.
Ashwin’s BBL Journey and Impact
Ashwin had officially joined Sydney Thunder in September 2025, with the club calling it “arguably the biggest signing in BBL history.” His inclusion was seen as a major boost for the league’s international profile. Thunder’s general manager Trent Copeland praised Ashwin’s leadership and tactical skills, saying he would “inspire a new wave of cricket fans.”
The veteran spinner had earlier turned down ILT20 offers after going unsold at the auction, choosing instead to commit fully to the BBL. His signing came after his retirement from international cricket (December 2024) and the IPL (August 2025), freeing him to participate in overseas leagues as a freelance T20 cricketer.
Sydney Thunder released an emotional statement saying they were “devastated” by the news. “Ashwin is a world-class talent whose presence would have lifted the entire group,” the team noted. Ashwin himself said, “I’m gutted but will focus on recovery and return stronger.”
The Thunder are now exploring replacement options from the BBL overseas draft, with names like Mujeeb Ur Rahman being considered. The team still retains spin depth with Chris Green, Tanveer Sangha, and Shadab Khan, but Ashwin’s experience and batting versatility (career T20 strike rate over 130) will be missed.
Ashwin’s injury is a setback not only for Sydney Thunder but also for the BBL’s global expansion. His participation was expected to attract Indian audiences and strengthen the league’s visibility. If recovery goes as planned, Ashwin could aim for a return in The Hundred 2026 or ILT20 2026.
