New Zealand have suffered a major setback in the middle of the ODI series against West Indies. Star batter Daryl Mitchell, who smashed a brilliant century in the first ODI at Christchurch, has been ruled out of the remainder of the series due to a groin injury. His absence comes as a shock, especially when he is in such exceptional form.
Mitchell’s injury surfaced right after his match-winning knock in the opening ODI, where he looked in visible discomfort while batting. The injury has now been confirmed to require at least two weeks of rest, ruling him out of the next two ODIs.
What Happened to Daryl Mitchell?
According to reports, Mitchell did not travel with the team to Napier for the 2nd ODI on 17 November. Instead, he underwent a scan in Christchurch, which revealed a mild groin strain. The medical team has advised him to stay out of action to avoid aggravating the injury.
This means Mitchell will not feature in the remaining matches of the ODI series, although New Zealand remains hopeful of his return ahead of the three-match Test series vs West Indies starting 2 December.
Henry Nicholls Returns to Strengthen Middle Order
In Mitchell’s absence, New Zealand have immediately called back Henry Nicholls, an experienced left-handed batter. Nicholls has played 81 ODIs, scoring 2180 runs, including 1 century and 15 fifties. He has been in excellent touch in domestic cricket, particularly in the Ford Trophy, which helped him earn a return.
Nicholls’ experience is expected to bring stability to New Zealand’s middle order for the remaining ODIs.
New Zealand head coach Rob Walter expressed disappointment over losing Mitchell at a crucial stage of the series.
Walter said:
- “Being ruled out in the middle of a series is always difficult, especially when you are in such good form.”
- “Daryl has been outstanding in the ODI format this summer. His absence for the next two matches will be felt.”
- “The positive news is that the injury is not serious, and we expect him to be fully fit before the Test series.”
Walter also praised Henry Nicholls, calling him a “reliable and experienced option” who can contribute immediately.
The first ODI at Hagley Oval was a thriller. New Zealand, batting first, posted 269/7, with Mitchell scoring a brilliant 100+ knock that earned him the Player of the Match award.
West Indies fought hard with Sherfane Rutherford’s half-century, but they eventually fell short by 7 runs, handing New Zealand a 1-0 lead.
Daryl Mitchell’s injury is undoubtedly a major blow for New Zealand, especially considering his exceptional form. However, the return of Henry Nicholls provides balance and experience to the squad. Fans now hope that Mitchell recovers in time for the crucial Test series, while New Zealand look to seal the ODI series against West Indies in his absence.
