The very first time the BGT series came into existence was in 1996/97, and since then, India have certainly dominated Australia in Test cricket.

6. Rohit Sharma – 2 wins

Since taking over the captaincy as test captain in 2022, Rohit has led India in the home Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) series in 2022-23. He has led India in four BGT test matches in that series, and India won that 2-1. So, as a captain, Rohit has won two out of four BGT test matches. He might be adding a few more wins as captain in the coming series.
5. Mohammad Azharuddin – 2 wins

Mohammad Azharuddin was the first Indian captain to win more than 10 test matches in his stint. He led India in 47 tests and won 14. Out of those 14 wins, two came in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) series. Azharuddin led India in the BGT 1997/98, and India won the series by a 2-1 margin. In 1999, he stepped down from captaincy and didn’t get the chance to lead India in another BGT series.
4. Virat Kohli – 3 Wins

Virat Kohli is the first Indian and Asian captain to win a test series in Australia, which is why he is regarded as one of the best Indian test captains of all time. As an Indian captain, he has registered most wins with an excellent record. Virat has won 40 out of 68 tests as captain.
He made his test debut during the 2014/15 BGT series when MS Dhoni announced his test retirement midway through the series. India were ranked no. 7 when he took the job, and under him, India remained no. 1 side for 4-5 years. Virat has led in ten BGT tests and won three of them.
3. Sourav Ganguly – 3 Wins

Sourav Ganguly took charge as test captain in 2000 and led India until 2005. Under his captaincy, India started giving tough competitions in SENA countries. Winning a single test in Australia was considered a massive achievement, and Ganguly was the captain when India won a BGT test for the first time in Australia during 2003-04. Ganguly led India in nine BGT tests and has three wins as captain.
2. Ajinkya Rahane – 3 Wins

Ajinkya Rahane’s contribution as captain is very underrated because he was never a full-time captain. He led India when the full-time captain wasn’t available, but Rahane has never lost a test as Indian captain. Rahane led India in one test during the 2017/18 BGT series and three during the 2020-21. Rahane won three out of four BGT test matches he led. India won the 2020-21 BGT series in Australia under his captaincy after Virat Kohli left after losing the first test.

MS Dhoni is the most-capped captain in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) history. He has led India between 2008 and 2014. Dhoni has led India in five different BGT series. Overall, under him, India have played 13 tests against Australia and won 8 matches overall with an exceptional win percentage of 61.53. Under him, India won BGT 2008/09, 2010/11, and 2012/13. He has won most BGT games among Indian or Australian captains.
