The Lanka Premier League (LPL), one of Sri Lanka biggest T20 tournaments, has officially been rescheduled. Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) announced that the sixth edition of the league will now be held from 8 July to 8 August 2026, instead of December 2025.
This major shift comes as Sri Lanka and India prepare to jointly host the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, which will be played from 7 February to 8 March 2026. With Pakistan scheduled to play all its matches in Sri Lanka, local cricket authorities are under pressure to upgrade and prepare stadiums to international standards well in advance.
Why LPL 2026 Was Postponed?
The key reason behind the rescheduling is the massive preparation required for the T20 World Cup. SLC officials have stated that stadiums, pitches, training zones, and facilities must undergo large-scale upgrades to meet ICC requirements.
With Sri Lanka hosting World Cup matches at:
- R. Premadasa Stadium, Colombo
- SSC Cricket Ground, Colombo
- Pallekele International Cricket Stadium, Kandy
…SLC felt that hosting LPL just weeks before the tournament could impact the quality of preparation. This is the first time in five years that LPL will not take place in its original annual window.
