The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) are preparing for a massive squad overhaul ahead of the IPL 2026 mini-auction, scheduled for December 15–16. After a disappointing IPL 2025 campaign, where the franchise finished eighth, KKR has decided to make bold structural changes to regain balance, consistency and direction.
KKR’s downfall began soon after they released former captain Shreyas Iyer, who had led the side to the IPL 2024 title. Under Ajinkya Rahane’s leadership in 2025, the team struggled tactically and never found the rhythm to compete. As a result, the franchise’s management is now resetting their approach from the core.
₹40 Crore Purse Ready for 2026 Rebuild
As per early reports, Kolkata Knight Riders are set to release a long list of underperforming players ahead of the 2026 auction. The most notable among them is Venkatesh Iyer, who was bought for a massive ₹23.75 crore but failed to justify the investment with consistent performances.
The franchise is also preparing to part ways with several overseas players to free up funds. A senior ESPNcricinfo journalist confirmed that KKR is likely to enter the mini-auction with a strong purse of nearly ₹40 crore, giving them a golden opportunity to reshape their squad.
With this significant purse, KKR aims to bid aggressively for a top-quality fast bowler or fast-bowling all-rounder, a role they lacked throughout the 2025 season.
Cameron Green Becomes KKR’s Prime Target
KKR has identified Australia’s Cameron Green as their marquee signing target. His explosive batting and seam-bowling abilities make him an ideal fit for KKR’s rebuild strategy. Green’s versatility, especially as a batting all-rounder who can bowl with pace, aligns perfectly with the franchise’s long-term plan.
If KKR manages to secure him, Green could become the foundation of their new team structure.
KL Rahul Trade Talks Officially End
Earlier, KKR and Delhi Capitals were involved in early discussions about a possible KL Rahul trade. Multiple swap proposals were explored, involving names like:
- Sunil Narine
- Rinku Singh
- Angkrish Raghuvanshi
- Harshit Rana
However, the talks collapsed as KKR refused to trade their young rising stars and core players. As confirmed by ESPNcricinfo, the KL Rahul deal is now officially off the table, and no trade involving him will take place.

KKR Preparing for a Fresh Start
Despite their tough 2025 season, the upcoming mini-auction gives Kolkata Knight Riders a rare opportunity to rebuild from scratch. The franchise is expected to release players like:
- Venkatesh Iyer
- Rahmanullah Gurbaz
- Moeen Ali
- Rovman Powell
- Mayank Markande
- Anrich Nortje
- Umran Malik
- Chetan Sakariya
- Manish Pandey
With a powerful ₹40 crore purse and a clear vision, the franchise now hopes to reshape its squad with impactful players who bring both consistency and match-winning ability.
The IPL 2026 season could mark a new era for KKR, and their auction strategy will play a major role in determining how quickly the franchise returns to the top.
