In a major development before the IPL 2026 mini auction, New Zealand’s veteran cricketer Kane Williamson has joined the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) as their strategic advisor. The move marks Williamson’s return to the IPL ecosystem after going unsold in the 2025 auction, where he later appeared in the commentary box. Now, he is set to play a crucial off-field role to guide LSG’s leadership and strengthen their long-term vision.
A New Chapter for Williamson
The 34-year-old, known for his calm leadership and deep understanding of the game, will be working closely with Rishabh Pant, who is expected to lead the team in the upcoming season. Williamson’s inclusion is being viewed as a smart move by LSG’s management, who are eager to bounce back after a disappointing 2025 season.
Reports suggest that Sanjeev Goenka, the franchise owner, personally approached Williamson for the advisory role. His vast experience as captain of Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) and New Zealand makes him one of the most respected cricketing minds in the sport.
LSG’s Strong Support Staff
Williamson joins an impressive LSG think tank featuring head coach Justin Langer, assistant coach Lance Klusener, bowling coach Bharat Arun, and spin bowling coach Carl Crowe. This five-member core group is being called LSG’s “strategic five,” responsible for shaping the team’s direction ahead of IPL 2026.
Crowe, who previously worked with Kolkata Knight Riders, recently took charge of LSG’s spin department, while Bharat Arun—India’s former bowling coach—came on board earlier in 2025. Together, they form one of the most experienced backroom teams in the league.
Williamson’s IPL Legacy
Across his IPL career, Kane Williamson has featured in 79 matches, scoring 2,128 runs with 18 half-centuries. He led SRH to the 2018 IPL final and also won the Orange Cap that season after scoring 735 runs. Known for his composed batting and sharp cricketing brain, Williamson’s presence is expected to help LSG build a more balanced and mentally strong unit.
Since debuting in IPL 2022, LSG have been consistent playoff contenders but are yet to clinch the title. With Williamson’s inclusion, the franchise hopes to bridge that final gap — combining international experience, tactical depth, and leadership clarity. His insights will also be crucial in planning the upcoming auction, team combinations, and match strategies.
