Justin Langer, the head coach of the Lucknow Super Giants, has an impressive resume, which makes him one of the prime candidates to be the head coach of India. The Board of Cricket Control in India (BCCI) is in search of a new head coach as Rahul Dravid’s contract is set to expire after the upcoming T20 World Cup. There have been several names that have been doing the rounds. The likes of Gautam Gambhir, VVS Laxman, Stephen Fleming, and Justin Langer have been tipped to be the candidates.
On Friday, after the LSG’s final game of the season, the former Australian coach indicated that he might not be in the race. He said,
“It would almost be the biggest job in cricket to be the head coach of the Indian cricket team because of the huge volume of cricket and the huge expectation. It would be a great challenge, and it would be great fun. It would be a wonderful opportunity to win ICC titles, but with all these things, the timing has got to be right.”
He also spoke about his past experience with the Australian side and mentioned how exhausting it can be with the pressure of winning being massive. VVS Laxman is not keen to take this opportunity, and the BCCI also does not want to disrupt the activities of the national cricket academy. They have reportedly contacted three foreign coaches. One of them is Justin Langer, and the other two are Stephen Fleming and Ricky Ponting.
As per the latest reports in ESPNCricinfo, Gambhir, the current mentor of the Kolkata Knight Riders, has been approached by BCCI to take up the India coaching role. The deadline to submit the applications closes on May 27. Thereafter, the shortlisted candidates will be called for an interview by BCCI’s Cricket Advisory Committee, comprising Ashok Malhotra, Sulakshana Naik, and Jatin Paranjape.
