England’s legendary fast bowler James Anderson has officially been awarded the Knighthood title, one of Britain’s highest civilian honours, for his remarkable contribution to cricket. The prestigious title of ‘Sir’ was conferred upon him by Princess Anne during a grand ceremony held at Windsor Castle.
Anderson, now known as Sir James Anderson, became the 15th English cricketer to receive this rare recognition, joining the elite list that includes Sir Ian Botham, Sir Geoffrey Boycott, Sir Alastair Cook, and Sir Andrew Strauss.
The honour was part of former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s 2024 Resignation Honours List, acknowledging Anderson’s two-decade-long service and unmatched consistency in international cricket.
A Career That Redefined Fast Bowling
James Anderson, one of the most skilled and accurate swing bowlers in the history of the game, bid farewell to international cricket in July 2024. His final appearance came at the Lord’s Cricket Ground against the West Indies, where he picked up four wickets to end a glorious career on a high.
Across 188 Test matches, Anderson claimed 704 wickets at an average of 26.45, making him the most successful fast bowler in Test cricket history. Only legendary spinners Muttiah Muralitharan (800) and Shane Warne (708) have taken more wickets than the English maestro.
Anderson also represented England in 194 ODIs, taking 269 wickets, which still remains a record for the country. He played 19 T20Is, picking up 18 wickets before focusing entirely on the longer formats.
Oldest Bowler to Top ICC Test Rankings
In February 2023, Anderson created history by becoming the oldest bowler to top the ICC Test Rankings at the age of 40 years and 207 days, surpassing Australia’s Pat Cummins. This milestone highlighted his longevity, discipline, and world-class fitness even in the later stages of his career.
Still Active in County Cricket
Even after retiring from international cricket, Anderson continues to remain active in the domestic circuit. He represented Lancashire during the 2025 county season, featuring in six Championship matches before an injury cut his season short.
The 43-year-old also made a T20 comeback after more than a decade, participating in the Vitality Blast and The Hundred tournaments for Manchester Originals. Reports suggest that he is in talks for a one-year contract extension with Lancashire for the 2026 season.
James Anderson’s journey from Burnley, Lancashire, to becoming a global cricketing icon is one of perseverance, class, and unmatched dedication. Over his 21-year-long international career, he not only led England’s bowling attack with distinction but also inspired an entire generation of fast bowlers worldwide.
His Knighthood is more than just an individual accolade — it’s a tribute to his relentless pursuit of excellence, professionalism, and contribution to English cricket’s golden era.
“Sir James Anderson! A special day for Jimmy as he receives his Knighthood from Princess Anne at Windsor Castle. The greatest fast bowler of all time,” wrote Lancashire on X (formerly Twitter).
With the Knighthood title, Sir James Anderson’s name is now etched among the most respected figures in British sport. From his record-breaking spells at Lord’s to his iconic duels with the world’s best batters, Anderson’s legacy will forever remain a cornerstone of cricketing history.
