Ponting who also served the Delhi Capitals as a head coach ended his 7-year tenure with the franchise and parted ways two months ago. He sidelined the English cricketer Trevor Bayliss and became the new head coach of the Punjab Kings.
It is also understood that Ricky Ponting’s first responsibility as the new HC of PBKS is to take a final call on the rest of the coaching staff of the franchise. It is not decided whether Punjab Kings will enter with previous season coaching staff Sanjay Bangar (head of cricket development), Charl Langeveldt (fast-bowling coach), and Sunil Joshi (spin-bowling coach) or not.
With Shikhar Dhawan retired from cricket, the head coach of PBKS Ricky Ponting will also identify a new skipper as well. But first Ponting has to shortlist the players for the upcoming IPL 2025 Mega Auction while BCCI is still finalizing the retention rules.
It will be tough to shortlist from Purple Cap winner allrounder Harshal Patel, batter Shashank Singh, Ashutosh Sharma, pacer Arshdeep Singh, leg spinner Rahul Chahar, and wicketkeeper-batter Jitesh Sharma including overseas players Sam Curran, Liam Livingstone, Jonny Bairstow, and South Africa quick Kagiso Rabada.
Speaking of the previous season Punjab Kings finished in the 9th position. Despite the 2014 seasons, the franchise hasn’t qualified for the IPL playoffs yet. With Ponting, Punjab Kings would like to change that for the upcoming IPL 2025. Ponting has had mixed results with Delhi Capitals since he joined the team in 2018. Under his guidance, the Capitals qualified for the Playoffs in 2019, 2020, and 2021 marking their first runner-up appearance in 2020.
