- An official warning
- One demerit point added to his record
This incident comes at a time when Rana is quickly rising as an exciting young bowler after taking 3 wickets for 65 runs in the Ranchi ODI.
Why Was Harshit Rana Punished?
The incident took place in the 22nd over of South Africa’s chase.
- Harshit Rana dismissed Dewald Brevis with a sharp delivery.
- After the wicket, he celebrated aggressively and made a gesture pointing towards the South African dugout.
- ICC officials felt this gesture was provocative and disrespectful, falling under Article 2.5: “Using gestures or language that may provoke an aggressive reaction from a batter after dismissal.”

Match referee Richie Richardson reviewed the incident and ruled it as a Level-1 offence, which is the mildest category but still punishable. Since this was Rana’s first offence in the last 24 months, he avoided a heavy penalty or suspension. Rana immediately accepted the charge, so no formal hearing was required.

Although the punishment does not affect Rana’s availability, the warning will make him more cautious. India is aiming to seal the series 2-0 in Raipur, and Rana is expected to play a crucial role again with the ball. The team management will now expect him to stay within the behavioral guidelines while maintaining his natural aggression.
Harshit Rana ICC punishment has certainly created headlines, but it is only a mild warning that won’t impact his participation. The young pacer has shown great promise, and the team will be hoping he continues to deliver impactful performances – without crossing the line.
