South Africa produced a dominant all-round performance in Guwahati to beat India by 408 runs, registering India biggest defeat in Test cricket by runs. With this massive win, the visitors sealed the two-match Test series 2-0, becoming the first team ever to clean sweep India in India on two different occasions.
The last time South Africa achieved this feat was back in 2000, when they had beaten India 2-0 on Indian soil. After 25 years, the Proteas repeated the same domination, exposing India growing struggles in home Test conditions.
India entered the final day needing 422 more runs to win the match and save the series. The total target of 549 was already the highest ever set for India at home since 2004, and the hosts never looked in contention.
By the end of Day 4, India were already 27/2, and South African bowlers needed only a couple of sessions on Day 5 to wrap up the remaining eight wickets. Their bowlers executed plans with discipline and intensity, dismantling India for just 140 runs in the second innings.
How South Africa Built Their Dominance
South Africa dominated this match from the very beginning. Batting first, they posted a massive 489 runs in the first innings.
- Senuran Muthusamy struck a brilliant 109, his maiden Test century
- Marco Jansen smashed 93, including 7 sixes—joint-most sixes against India in a Test innings
- Solid contributions from Aiden Markram, Ryan Rickelton, Temba Bavuma and Tristan Stubbs kept India under pressure throughout
India’s bowling lacked consistency.
- Kuldeep Yadav picked 4 wickets,
- Bumrah and Siraj took 2 each, but none could stop the run flow.
India First-Innings Collapse
In response, India faltered badly and were bowled out for 201. Only Yashasvi Jaiswal (58) and Washington Sundar (48) showed fight, while the rest of the batting lineup crumbled one after another. From 95/1, India collapsed to 122/7, losing 6 wickets for just 27 runs.
South Africa gained a huge 288-run lead, and instead of enforcing the follow-on, extended the advantage with another strong batting show.
South Africa Second Innings: Declared at 260/5
Tristan Stubbs once again displayed excellent temperament, scoring 93, missing out on a century. Captain Temba Bavuma declared the innings at 260/5, setting India a near-impossible target of 549 runs.
India Crumble, Series Ends 2-0
Under pressure on the final day, Team India’s batters could not handle South Africa relentless spin-pace attack. The collapse continued, and the hosts were bowled out for 140, leading to a humiliating 408-run defeat—the biggest by run margin in India’s Test history.
This result marked:
- South Africa second clean sweep in India
- India’s fourth home Test defeat under the current management
- India’s aura at home taking a major hit
India failure in this series has opened debates once again about selection calls, preparation, pitch strategy, and over-reliance on all-rounders instead of longer-format specialists. Despite home advantage, India never seemed in control throughout the two Tests. This 2-0 loss will go down as one of India’s most disappointing home Test series in recent years.
